Super Metroid
Is it worth playing?

I never got into it as a kid, I guess it was too confusing. But now I'm older maybe I should try it again.

What the point of stupid thread like that?

It’s like 5 hours long on a first playthrough, see for yourself.

Have you somehow never seen a greatest games of all time list in your life? It’s always in the top ten, often in the top 3. Do you really think a bad game that’s not worth playing at least once would have that kind of critical staying power for 3 decades and counting?

Well shit, I guess I’m just a boomer. I looked at a few lists and it wasn’t on there. Metacritic has Prime 1 and Prime 1 remastered above it (haven’t even found it on their list yet). I guess maybe it’s not as well loved anymore.

The controls are shit and the level design is poor. It's not a great game, it just gets glazed because it's one of the "iconic SNES games". I won't say to don't play it, but don't be surprised when it is a disappointment.

Some things that are "praised" are shit or boring though. Anyway I started Super Metroid and it's interesting so far.

>5 hours long
I doubt I could complete it in that amount of time. When I played it as a kid I probably spent more than 5 hours just getting lost.

Which SNES games do you think are better?

Yep, it's a good game. Just take your time with it - there's no need to rush through it, just enjoy the atmosphere. I envy you that you're playing it for the first time.

Love all the unexplained details in the game - the golden statue, the wrecked ship - that you can hazard a guess as to what they actually are, and why they're there.

My only small gripe with the game is that a few fakeouts - the mini Kraid, Ridley's baby metroid room - don't really work. But that's it.

It's not my first time playing it, I tried playing it when I was a kid, but maybe I was too young or dumb for it at the time. I didn't get very far at that time so maybe I should try getting further this time.

Super's controls are fine for the most part but I never liked that Angle Up and Angle Down are on seperate buttons and neither one can be remapped to any face button which sucks hecause having R be the Run button makes it way easier to jump and shoot while going fast. The action mappings really pushed the SNES pad to its limit. Having to mash select to get to your Super Missiles, Power Bombs and Grapple Beam also feels a little weird but maybe it's because I played Fusion first and they were forced to streamline the controls for the GBA.
Anonymous No.11991607 >>11991697
Honestly if you have trouble hitting 2 buttons at the same time maybe video games aren't your thing. Or try something like pong where there's no buttons, just a single dial.

Who said anything about two buttons? Having to claw grip alot of rooms is just annoying.
Anonymous No.11991764 >>11991790
>>11991697
The only times I ever have to claw grip is when I pull off tricks like springball double jumps. The fuck are you doing?
The thing about SMs control scheme is that it rewards preparedness. To me it sounds like you need to claw because you don't think ahead of time and then scramble to select the right weapon or something.

>The fuck are you doing?
Trying to collect all the items faster than I did the previous time? It comes up enough to save a good amount of time if you know when. As for the weapon select that's mostly on me pressing it more than I have to sometimes kek

i like to have weapon select be on A and weapon cancel be on select personally, easier to do it on the fly that way

I just can't get into Metroid past entering the Justin Bailey code for the NES game.
Anonymous No.11992237 >>11992275
Yes, but play it with a modern controller that has 4 shoulder buttons. Map Dash to L1 and aim up and down to R1 and R2. That fixes the only problem with the game.

Interesting, I've always struggled to find a control scheme that really clicks for me but maybe I'll try that setup one of these days when I really feel like doing another 100% run
>>11992237
This seems reasonable. Tried it on the NSO SNES emulator for shits and giggles and man the Pro Controller and the input lag they added is just godawful.
Anonymous No.11992290
>>11992275
As a bonus, since Dash is no longer on a face button, you can take item select or cancel off the Select button and put it on a face button instead, so item select and item cancel are right next to each other and you don't have to stop moving to cycle through your items.

Have you never played Super Metroid before?
The percentage refers to item collection. 14% is the lowest you can complete the game with. Less items of course makes the game harder.
Anonymous No.12000459 >>12000768
>>11997027
Pretty hard. Draygon, Ridley and Mother Brain are a serious challenge in low% runs. And that's without counting some of the strats you need to pull off in order to reach lower norfair or wrecked ship. Deer Tier webpage has guides for the fights and strats, so check them out
Anonymous No.12000464

it's decent, maybe a bit overhyped.
not too long, so why not? a completionist casual run should be under 10 hours

What items did you collect? From what I read Ice Beam seems to be the most sensible and Speedbooster is some cancer. Problem is shortcharging is the only way I can reliably get across the moat lol.
Since I'm not speedrunning I guess I can just attempt HBJ or CWJ until they stick.
Anonymous No.12001664
>>11997027
Low% Ice is pretty easy, except for Ridley and Mother Brain, MB just takes forever, but Ridley really is fierce, you will have to really know what he's doing even when he's not on screen, but there's tricks to make the fight manageable.
Draygon isn't very challenging, he just takes a while.
I regularly replay it in this fashion.

Low% Speedbooster was much much worse, because you need to hit Ridley and MB even more. I did this once and will never do it again, same with reverse boss order.

>>12000768
If you're going for your first low%, definately pick Ice. CWJ'ing across the moat isn't too hard.
