I'm from Northern Mexico, and so far, so good, narcos haven't tried to steal my Deck, though I've been asked about it while playing in public. The Deck is like the new PSP; it can do everything.

The only issue I have is that, since it can run anything, I’m not sure what to emulate next. A few months ago, I finished 46 Okunen Monogatari, a PC-98 RPG, and the Deck's ratio was perfect for it. I'm considering giving Touhou a try next.

day one buyer here. First got it for PC games, then saw the potential it had as an emulation device. I used to use a Raspberry Pi 3 (terrible device) and a PS Mini I got on clearance for $25 in 2019, the Deck with a USB-C dock has replaced all that stuff.

I prefer playing on original hardware but I do have a Steam Deck for indies and older PC games.

The deck (like most valve projects) is currently in an in-between state.
It's the "just good enough category" for most tasks.
It's expensive - but not excessively expensive.
It's bulky - but not so bulky that it's unusable
It has a shitty form factor for emulating dual screen games outright.
It has an outstanding screen, but it's not good enough to justify the upcharge.
It's got a good linux kit, but it's stuck right inbetween native Android apps and native windows apps. It can't run native Android apps, but it also struggles with high performance windows games.
With the way that valve refuses to elaborate on a project to actually solve real concerns, it's probably going to get one or one and a half gen of support then die off (like the controller).
Hopefully deadlock gets killed first.

You can't beat it for handheld emulation IMO, enough power to run the best emulators, with shaders. Though, I am very particular about playing with a period accurate controller for whatever vidya I'm emulationg, so the portability aspect is lost on me.

Today I started playing Snatcher for Sega CD on my 'eck. I'm using the touchpad and touchscreen as a mouse, allowing me to emulate the justifier simply by touching it.

I have a Legion Y700 for emulation up to GameCube / Wii. The tablet is better for 3DS emulation then a Deck and overall it's a much more portable and better battery life experience. If I could be bothered there's probably ways of getting passable PC indie games onto it too.

it won't, this game has been going on too long with playtesting to just up and can. i know how often valve loves to cancel games but this game is n't just being developed by them, icefrog is the main guy working on it (dota creator) along with the risk of rain devs being hired onto valve just to work on this game. it's a very refreshing take on moba's and i don't possibly see how this game could fail.

I got one. Best emulation handheld for the price but the lack of VRR is sorely missed.
If you don't care about native PC games save for maybe some really old sourceports, you could get away a 64GB refurb model. They're dirt cheap and will be better than any chintzy Android handheld. The stock screen resolution is too low for my liking but I can fix that with DeckHD in the future/

Is a Steam Deck OLED worth it even with the lower resolution screen? It not having a 1080 screen is the main thing holding me back from biting the bullet.

Retro PCs (MacOS 9, MS-DOS, PC-98) ran at 16:10, Anon. DOS games look pixel-perfect on Steam Deck. Four times 320x200 is 1280x800.

Playing F Zero GX, is so hard

Bought the 256gb lcd anti glare screen. Love it. Threw on another antiglare protector and it still is great. Idk why the etched glass got such harsh reviews over the slightest diff in screen brightness.

Love playing PS2 or even old snes games on a fairly large screen. I admit I still have a phone I play GBA and older handheld games with but for anything else? Man.... the gaming I can do on a steamdeck. I'm not a snob though; I've looked admiringly at the oneXplayer brand of handheld pc and while the controls are whatever, the specs are impressive. I like modular, easily ported pc setups and I don't want a pc that requires a small reactor to run so I love all this modular PC handheld stuff coming out. Most android-helds are cheap garbage so I really like the durability and customer service you get with a steamdeck. Plus Linux.

Because of the sticks, in my 13 years of owning a Vita, I have, not once, put the thing in my pocket. It always goes in its protective case and thrown in my bag for transport. Due to that, I'm not too bothered over the size of the Deck. It goes in the same bag I've had for over 15 years.

The Vita is still such a beautiful system and a joy to play on.

I have, and it's been a great machine for it. First game I emulated was Last Bible on Gamegear. It's alright. Currently bouncing back and forth a bit between Wizardry Gaiden II and Wild ARMs. I think I missed an optional boss and can't go back for it, ah well. I noticed once I got a Deck that I was playing more of my games more often, but I think that's just cuz I've always loved handhelds in general.

Since you were playing PC-98, I'd recommend Revival Xanadu, or Farland Story off hand. Brandish 1 and 2 are also great. How was 46 Okunen? It's been staring at me in my library for awhile and I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I already have a PC, and plenty of official consoles and handhelds. If i really needed a portable solution, I'd use my phone.
