I beat it recently and by the end of the game I was sick of it. The character switching is frustrating, the new enemy designs are lame, and the story isn't as good as the previous games.

Code Veronica always felt half-assed to me. The story begins with the plot actively starting around you instead of you discovering something that has already happened and had time to set in. The settings feel incredibly disjointed, I'm aware you travel great distances but there's a frustrating lack of congruency overall, not to mention the "duplicate Spencer Mansion" is 100% pointless. Most of the enemy designs feel either uncreative or derivative of past enemies (aside from the Bandersnatch). Steve really doesn't contribute much aside from being annoying and the Ashfords are just plain uninteresting. The 3D backgrounds also really lack a feeling of life, ironically.

I can't say it's an awful game, but it's definitely a step down from most of the contempory RE titles.

It wouldn't have saved the game but the dropped plot where the Ashfords were Nazi expats who fled to South America would have at least been something. A better, more creative dev team could have leaned into that and made a sort of pulpy Resident Evil meets Wolfenstein thing. I think that could have done pretty well at the time with the whole wave of WW2 games going on. Whoever made it clearly didn't give a shit though and just did the bare minimum.

4. RE3's campaign has good replay value while RE2's is poor
5. Any game besides Outbreak presenting any modicum of challenge
6. REmake is overwrought while 96 is modernist and realistic
7. CODE: Veronica is not a quality survival horror game
8. Complete lack of discussion of Outbreak, battle games and mercenary modes eg any game/mode that has higher skill thresholds
9. Refusal to admit 1996 is a tarted up Alone in the Dark, and the survival horror genre is a sequela of bad translation and Japan's fear of the rental market

Graphics are way too soft and bland compared to previous games
The characters, aside from Chris and Claire, are cringe and lacking in charisma. The death of the dual wield guy felt great.
Too much backtracking.
Overstay its welcome.
Dumb plot.
Incoherent and obnoxious areas and map design.

You only hated Code Veronica if:

>you didn't backtrack enough as Claire
>you get your ass beat by the tyrant plane fight
>you get your ass beat by the nosferatu platform fight
>got offended by the "crossdressing freak" line
Some others I can't recall, but this is good enough. Steve and the crystal ball card are legitimate grievances.

This is pretty good criticism. It's a long game. I played it a couple months after beating Resident Evil 3 for the first time and I think Code Veronica X took me twice as long. It's fatiguing.

The boss thing is important. If you aren't avoiding enemies and conserving ammo you're going to be fucked by the Tyrant fight on the plane. Even if you have all that ammo it'll take you a while to realize you need to spend it all now.

I played and beat it, there's plenty of moments that are spooky and fun. There's good challenge. My big criticism is it's a really dark game, they wanted you to use that lighter constantly.

The entire genre of tank control action adventures is dogshit. Without a doubt an important milestone, but these games always felt too clunky and slow, only held together by weird Japanese over the top storylines.

I don't know how I was able to like this back on the DC. I tried playing this shit again a couple of years ago and holy fuck it's insufferable. Almost as bad as 0.

It isn't dogshit, but it is underwhelming.
You can have some good classic survival horror moments here and there, but the game lacks tension and has very few surprises, the plot feels like a bad soap opera even when compared to RE1 specially with those villains, it isn't unnerving in the slightest even for RE standards and Silent Hill utterly destroys it in that category and sound design. It also lacks replay value compared to RE2 and RE3.
Again, it isn't outright shit/bad but it's just so dull compared to the other games of this series.

Loved every bit of it playing it on Dreamcast when it first came out.

Oh also this, the 3d backgrounds are very dull. Silent Hill 1 was doing all these crazy claustrophobic camera angles but CV doesn't even try and the rooms are rarely as memorable as what you were getting in the pre-rendered backgrounds from the og trilogy.

Another thing I hated in CV. Even in RE1, shooting a zombie in the head with a shotgun felt satisfying and pretty violent despite the limited graphics. Re2 had tamer death scenes but zombies would get cut in half and whatnot which made combat feel more satisfying and fitting for a horror game about zombies.
CV just lacks anything violent and the visual feedback was the weakest in the series at that point.
