Let's hear some glitch stories, perhaps something that ended a game early or helped in some way.

Playing adventures of Batman and Robin w a buddy. Notice after awhile Iβm not taking damage and we really want to finally beat the game and see the rest of it getting stuck half way through. Buddy notices my controller is partially unplugged. I tell him not to mess w it so we can just beat the game. He pushes it in anyway, I immediately start taking damage and die. Fuck u Brian

In WonderBoy in Monster Land on master system it generated a pic like what is attached. For about a month or so we were obsessed with getting this glitch again and we were able to do it about 3 times within that month but never again. This absolutely amazed me since it felt like getting a new level, sometimes you would just get stuck, other times the level would wrap around and fix it self and one of other time we just kept going until the door appeared again and went onto the next level. I was able to generate basically the same thing by messing around with the memory viewer in emuliscious just typing random values.

I've gotten the All Ghosts glitch in Doom once while playing through Necromantic Thirst. If I didn't already know what it was I would have been very confused.

I don't know if it was a glitch or a rare intended occurence, those Iron Knuckles in OoT can dish out 4 hearts of damage per hit, but I remember them doing 8 hearts with a wide swing like a spin attack. Only happened once and I never figured out how to trigger it.
I bought a Majora's Mask cartridge recently and the graphics looked all glitchy, but in a somewhat artful-looking way that seemed intentional. There was a wavy veil over much of the screen, seemingly occupying alternate pixel columns at times, or something like that. Then I watched further into the opening and figured out that it was surely a glitch. I don't know for sure but I suspect the cartridge is fine and my expansion pak is failing (or was never good to begin with). The expansion pak is a third-party knockoff piece of crap I bought online during GameCube/Wii times and I don't even clearly remember why I ever wanted it. I don't think I have any other games that use it.
I intend to play through the game with the wavy artifact. It seems like it might be a fun experience. Of course, it's very possible that the program will simply lock up at some point. It depends on what the game uses that memory for. I'll probably take some pictures and make a thread or something, when I get around to doing that, if it turns out interestingly.

I discovered a bug in Crystalis that lets you buy an item in a shop for the price of the item in the store-item-slot next to it (which is zero if the store doesn't happen to list an item in that slot). I abused it heavily to get free money by buying things for less than their resale prices. I think I tried to write about it to Nintendo Power once but probably too late for them to still be publishing NES game secrets. I don't actually remember whether I sent the letter or not though - maybe I just thought about it. Either way, they never published it.
If I remember right: To exploit the bug you just hold down a direction to make your cursor move fast in the shop (I think maybe it has to be going right and not left? I forget) and press A at the moment when the cursor has just hit the item you want but some part of the game still thinks it's on the previous slot.

I liked doing the thing in Zelda 2 where you use the jump spell to go way off the top of the screen in a town with tall buildings and then turn into a fairy and move a little and suddenly teleport into a weird place because the game apparently doesn't understand how to handle a fairy that's off the screen.
I also liked doing the thing in Metroid where you shoot open a door and then let it reform atop you, so that you're inside a barrier that you can't normally walk through, and then somehow repeatedly unroll and roll again and/or jump a lot (I forget the details) in order to slowly rise through the door tiles and into the normally impenetrable wall tiles above, eventually leaving the normal game map entirely and entering a chaotic out-of-bounds area.

Due to some funkiness with rounding errors, you can corrupt the memory of the game so that the blockmap which handles collision basically disappears and anything that relies on it stops working. Includes clipping, hitscan, projectile damage and a bunch of other stuff. I forget all the effects.
Decino made a pretty good video about it. Only reason I knew what happened.

i found a bug in one of my favourite games that allows you to softlock the game (it's not frozen but you get stuck in a place you can't escape from and you have to reset). it's on the FINAL FUCKING LEVEL too.

I know it's passe to talk about Majora's Mask glitches because of all the creepypasta shit, but on my first real playthrough of it, I got to the Spring Water Cave where Sharp resides, and right after he starts his song that hurts you until you die, I shit you not, the game completely froze with a sustained EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE noise. Obviously it scared the shit out of me, though soon after the realization set in that this meant I'd have to reset, and since I hadn't saved in a while, I'd have to do a bunch of shit all over again, which turned fear into frustration.

Not a glitch but I remember as a kid playing Wonderboy 3 on SMS with a friend and as I was playing I was making shit up (as kids do) about how I found a secret door that led me to the final boss and I saw the ending and literally as I was saying that crap I pressed up randomly and entered a hidden door to the pirate boss (I think). Had no idea the door was there, was pure coincidence. Acted like I knew it was there lol but inside my mind was blown

If you got a letter back from Nintendo Power thanking you for the info and giving you an Agent #, then you sent it in. If you didn't, then you didn't send it in. I had about 12 of those letters before I lost them along with my NP magazine collection. I got one letter just for sending in locations to a few hidden point-rewarding items in Snow Bros, so the bar for entry was pretty damn low.

I am being 100 percent serious as well. At that time I was a latchkey kid and nobody would be home until 9PM or later sometimes and I would be scared shitless by that or something else. I would also get super into games so it would get dark but I dIdn't move so no lights were on in the hallway or anything so I couldn't move. The period of time I played games in the basement was pure hell as going up the stairs was the craziest shit as I always felt like something was behind me and would run fast as fuk after I got up the courage to go up them. Another one is when I rented Mission Impossible. There is a part where you escort some guy and you can kill him but he just pops up and comes back to life like nothing happened. That scared the ever loving shit out of me and put some early-onset existential dread into me.

When we were kids, my brother and I got our NES secondhand from our dad's smoker friend, shit was grody and only read carts like 20% of the time, and sometimes it would read them wrong, but that was part of the fun. Anyway, one day we booted up Duck Hunt and the menu options read FUCK instead of DUCK. 1 FUCK or 2 FUCKS. Funniest shit ever when you're 11 years old.

Playing Gun on PS2, I saved in middle of that part where you go to someplace I forgot and they take out your entire arsenal, which you recover in middle of the mission to take out the boss. I've decided to continue later and when I reloaded the save and found out my arsenal was gone and couldn't fight the boss as you can only kill him by shooting at him.

I was fucking around with the test and service mode options on mame 2003 plus while playing Bosconian and picrel happened. Sometimes it would scream at me (just the audio getting hung up on a high note) while the screen filled up with red numbers. It's cool as fuck to do.
