I really like this game.
And I'm optimistic a thread could be had about it without any weird sensationalism or guile involved.

I think it's a good game but I legitimately don't understand why some people are so autistic about it, I mean like getting all S ranks on DMD and all that shit. It's not Onimusha but it still feels more like an action adventure game with its cinematic camera angles, key items and all that and not an arcadey experience

I never really played the game to be fair... But the aesthetic/style alone makes me cringe. I wonder what the dialogue is like!
DMC1 is a piece of shit that does almost nothing well.
>key upgrades unlocked behind jarpig grinding crap
>difficulty levels are completely fucked where on the highest difficulty, regular enemies are actually much weaker. They have the same health, and only deal 60% more damage while your HP (with all blue orbs) is 3x higher. Then you factor in all the additional moves and increased DT you've unlocked, and they just became total trashmob pushovers, while bosses have a fuckhuge damage and health increase. Basically just turns the game into a glorified bossrush.
>levels are big labyrinthine areas with time-wasting fetch quests where you grab some random arbitrary gizmo trash and then run across the map to stick it in the random designated gizmo slot to progress
>camera is about as awful as they come in a 3D action game, especially since movement is relative to camera (unlike RE for example)
>despite literally having an entire system to lock onto enemies, even when it's NOT ACTIVE, Dante STILL magnetizes to the nearest enemy whenever he attacks even if they are 30+ feet away. It's also extremely finicky to lock onto the proper enemy you want. It's impossible to emphasize just how much these factors make combat feel like complete shit
>absolutely AWFUL underwater sections
>slow, clunky menu weapon changes
>recycles each boss multiple times, overall low enemy variety in general (but again, they become irrelevant on anything beyond a new fresh run)
>items completely trivialize all challenge in the game, and you can even still earn S-ranks with these items
In the context in which it released, it deserves credit, but played today, it does not hold up nearly as well, and there is basically nothing it does better than later action games. Dozens of later action games like God of War, Ninja Gaiden, God Hand, and more (many of which I can't name because not retro) and even later DMC games absolutely pound it into the dirt.

>upgrades
The odd thing is that experienced players can rake in tons of red orbs very quickly by clearing the early missions with a Special Bonus rating (effectively DMC1's version of SS rank), but new players are just going to be stuck with a limited moveset for a long time. That being said, I don't recall any particularly bad moves in DMC1 that are a waste of red orbs, just some where their utility isn't immediately obvious.
>difficulty levels
Higher difficulty levels also change the spawn patterns of enemies. Fetishes and Frosts show up much earlier, and Shadows show up two or even three at a time. However outside of Shadows I don't think they increase the number of enemies, so yeah it does lead to a boss rush situation. Personally I prefer DMC1's approach to regular enemies on DMD compared to how DMC3 did it.

Because it's fun and challenging? You can't just tank hits, you need to pace the timing of your attacks, exploit enemy/boss weak points and tone down your skills to be successful at it. If enjoy the gameplay, you couldn't ask for more.

Get good and quit whining like a bitch. DMC1 is one of the few games where higher difficulties introduce new enemies and patterns and you're forced to relearn how you fight them not to get owned. You sound like an insufferable faggot that couldn't even get past the first mission on DMD without being powered-up titties up.

PCSX2 just works nowadays, I doubt you'll have any problems. I got the collection on Steam and yeah, I didn't have a good experience. Had to run it at 720p or else I'd get extreme audio desync in cutscenes. Really not sure how that even happens.

I don't know how to impart it, but this and gta 3 were the first games I got with my ps2 on Christmas and I don't know if a generation jump has blown my kind as much as this game. I played for the first time in 20 years and I'm still blown away by how good it still looks and plays.

Yeah, if you make it to DMD then obviously the regular enemies aren't much of a threat. So just bumping up their health/damage numbers even higher isn't going to do anything except make the game a slog. DMC1 benefits in some ways from playthroughs not taking very long and I don't see anything wrong with the boss rush aspect.

No issues with the PCSX2 version anymore and it upscales nicely. It's better than the HD versions which all have various issues, sometimes affecting gameplay.

currently playing dmc 1 for the first time
i like some games with fixed camera but fixed camera in an action game is not exactly ideal. i don't think there is a lockon well if there is i haven't discovered it and google results weren't clear enough. the truth is i don't know how to dodge/roll i know it's possible because i've seen people do it on youtube but i can only jump. wtf
the game is pretty tough. i rolled credits on a lot of modern games that are considered difficult but being an older game with some jank i think it's more challenging. i just beat the scissor guy in mission 6. used holy water on him and he just melted. so that wasn't so bad. there is a lot of trial and error in this game, it's more brutal than i thought i was. i don't want to use up yellow orbs yet so i just restart the game every time i die which is a pain.i never thought i would but i am starting to use a guide. on a hack and slash game. oops
even with my complaints there is definitely something here. and i do like it and don't regret paying money for the hd collection

You have to hold R1 to lock onto the nearest enemy. You must hold R1 then press triangle in order to perform a dodge roll.

>camera
It's one of my favorite games but the camera still trips me up sometimes. It helps more if you learn where the camera angle changes and once you get good enough to fight without having to run around so much.
>lockon
There is no permanent lock on that you can set on an enemy. You just automatically lock on to the nearest enemy for melee attacks and when firing guns.
>i don't know how to dodge/roll
Hold R1 or whatever button you're using, then while moving left or right, tap the jump button. But it's left or right according to Dante. So if Dante is facing right then up and down will make him move left and right and let you dodge while holding R1 and tapping jump.
Rolling has fairly limited uses though, you're better off just using jump to dodge since it has a short invincibility window I think and it's easier to pull off.

I think I only ever used rolling for the grenade rolling trick, and using short jumps with Rolling Blaze may still be faster for that.

I miss the Gothic atmosphere and residual Resident Evil-ness from the first game so much. The new more urban style just doesn't resonate with me as much, would definitely like to see Dante fight an ancient evil while wearing velvet again instead of hobo clothes.
