This console was just mostly

>60fps ver of a ps2 game
>Consolized version of a PC game

I wish it had more cool exclusives but most of them were awful like Dino Crisis 3. I really tried to like DC 3 and ignored all the stories about it, but much like dmc2, it's actually fucking shit.

It does have some neat exclusives but they're too few to even think about calling this console underrated.

I had one and enjoyed it but there was nothing really special about it.
The coolest thing you could do was hack it and turn it into an emulation machine that could hook up to your tv without a tv card back then. It would still play regular xbox games too. Was probably the best thing about the console because it also had a built in LAN port to transfer games and roms.

>Massively underrated console.
I agree. I was a teenager in Australia when the Xbox released in here in 2002 and I literally didn't even know it even existed. PC and PS2 simply dominated here at the time. I think the Xbox 360 was a lot more popular here. I actually found an old Xbox circa 2017 at a local e-waste facility, probably the first time I had ever seen one in-person, and after I figured out how to soft-mod it et cetera I was blown away by some of its exclusives and what it could do, etc. I have only played anf finished Halo: Combat Evolved and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on it (from an upgraded IDE HDD) so far, but I am planning to play Genma Onimusha next.

Xbox is a PC. If I want a PC, I buy a PC an actual PC and not a PC locked for gaming only (this would be dumb), unless I want to save money and just play games, but that's what Sony, Nintendo, and Sega consoles are for. Microsoft = PC. I don't want a Microsoft console because it's just a PC. If I want a PC, I buy a PC. Therefore, I don't need an Xbox.

You got it. It's "last year's PC hardware (in a 2001 sense) bought cheap on clearance from parts suppliers, and repackaged into a console." It even runs on the Windows PC kernel that's modified for "console" use so games run like console games instead of like PC games.

I was a Xbox guy, I bought it like everyone in the world with the Halo 2 bundle. My to go game was Halo 2 I played so much of it that I even started speedrunning it before discovering speedrun and infact when I discovered the speedruns of Halo 2 I noticed that I used their tactics (not everything I didn't discovered the sword dash sniper).
Anyway I have so much memories with this console too many games but I think the one that I replayed so much and was my favorite is pic related.
Other games that I played a lot with friends and especially my brother were:
-Halo 2
-Star wars battlefront 2
-The Warriors

I just bought the Aladin Chip already flashed now me and my brother are gonna put it on our xbox 1.6 and then we're golden, we're gonna do a 2000 night with old friends and playing those games we never tried or bought.
I wanna do a honorable mention of my games that I played a lot on Xbox and one of the few original games I still Own.

I am actually surprised that they managed to have an XBOX magazine for so long in japan.
I am however not surprised that about half of those covers have DoA girls on them. Probably THE system seller over there. Also lmao on the japanized Sudeki artwork.

Xbox library suffers from not having many exclusives. Multi platforms were usually the best on it which is something, but why should I play Halo CE or Riddick on the Xbox, when I can do that on PC too - nowadays with good frame-rate and resolution? Some games had really bad ports, but you'd have to look that up before you play.
Started to play Scarface on it, cool game that is able to run at 720p widescreen. However, this will absolutely tank the framerate, so it's better to play in 480p. Even then 16:9 is obviously more demanding than 4:3. Still cool that we had the option in fucking 2006.
Apart from playing Halo 2 with my brother in coop, I guess Ninja Gaiden was definitly the best game I had for it back then. I also have fond memories of Crimson Skyes and DoA2:U.

You are not wrong and the "key" bullshit is bullshit alright. However I know not one person that still owns his original PS2. I know several people that had at least two - Sony was hardly any better in quality control. People tend to forgive them because PS2 were cheap enough to get new ones and the fats could be HDD modded easily, so the fucked DVD drives didn't matter that much back then.

Yea you never really know what widescreen entails on the console. M$ had the right idea with putting all settings into the system menu, but every game has a different idea of what "widescreen" is. Kind of like HDR today - good tech, but bad implementation.
That reminds me: NTSC-Xbox allowed you to choose between 480i, 480p, and 720p resolutions. (Soul Calibur II is great in 720p) cool stuff. PAL-Xbox didn't have the progressive scan options sadly, but it had a system wide PAL-60 mode, so we didn't have to deal with 50Hz games anymore. In theory at least...as random games (like fucking Halo!) had problems with it, but you could never know this unless you tried. Turning a great feature into guess-work sometimes. I imagine some games made use of the higher 576i resolution, but who knows.

I will say that certain consoles have a lot of soul due to their specific architecture. In the end however, does it matter if the Xbox was basically a PC?

I think that Nintendo and Sega have a high amount of soul to them. Their platforms feels so authentic. Like they wanted to make certain games and they made the hardware with these games in mind. Their franchises also feel so interconnected and part of your childhood even if you have never played them.

It's extremely easy, works on modded, unmodded* consoles, and emulators. Just connect your xbox with an ethernet cable to the internet, run the insignia installer and register your console. From there follow the instructions on https://insignia.live/connect using your e-mail.

Getting the installer isn't difficult. You can build your own with stuff like this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076HHZ41Z

Some people sell memory cards on ebay that will run the installer too which is about as plug and play as it gets.

I would add to the list pic related.
The first time I saw an Xbox was at a friend's house and he was playing this game and I was hooked from the Xbox but I bought it like 2 years later. While this game only like in 2010 at a closing block buster for 3€, I loved the game and style of rta mixed with third person RPG, sometimes the missions and the mechanics were hard to understand at first but after you get the game you really fell like a war commander leading your men.

I bought mine in 2006 with a DuoX2 and 80gb hdd when I was ~15y and video rental stores where a thing. I remember the fee for a weekend was around 5€ and I chose the games based on the cover and the back cover and spent ages browsing through the shelves. Love the CoinOps emu and never had any major issues with this nearly 20 year old console.

Sort of yeah. Once the servers died and people just stopped playing Halo there was no reason to own an Xbox. Online Halo was it. In the modern day it's inexpensive to play games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2 on PC at max settings. Not sure what else there is worth playing on Xbox.

That one is good too. I didn't want to add too much to the list. I could've added a bunch of mech and sports games as well. Like Steel Battalion, MechAssault, Amped and Top Spin.

Microsoft were fucking faggots for discontinuing and shutting off Xbox live for the original Xbox but NOT making it so halo 2 could be played online on the 360. That was their flagship game. One of my earliest clues that Microsoft was shit.

Ninja Gaiden Black is still an exclusive and last time I checked doesn't emulate perfectly. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is not the same thing and many think it's worse. Maybe you can play it on the newer xboxes though

I am so sick of people like you, just because it doesn't interest you doesn't mean there aren't games worth playing on it. You probably think the Genesis was nothing but sports games, huh? Anons are listing games and you keep at it like it's only a Halo machine. Just goes to show your own ignorance.

While we are on the subject of the original Xbox and emulation it was a pretty great console for running emulators back in the day. It ran MUGEN better than a lot of hacked modern day consoles.
A good portion of my nostalgia for the classic Xbox comes from playing a bunch of arcade classics for the first time on my Xbox that my mom's boyfriend at the time hacked for me.

This is a reason why the Xbox is so wrong in every way. All the game sare online based and thus have actual expiration dates, aside from being the latest fad or trend. Japanese games are timeless, westslop tends way too hard towards being online multiplayer based or brownoid crime simulators.

You can never replay Halo 2 as it was because nobody plays it anymore and it was meant to be played with others. In the meantime you can enjoy Fortnite and in the future a further devolution of the FPS genre.

Great console held back by a lack of titles. The titles it did get performed better than the PS2/DC/GC counterparts, but it just lacked the Japanese titles that carried Sony.

They remedied this with the 360 though

Ever heard of campaign mode? or Insignia if you want online play? Xbox has very strong cult following, and most of its best titles are enjoyable via offline play.

Why do snoys and tendies cope so hard? it's absolutely pathetic. Outside sales, you enjoyed an inferior console and there is nothing wrong with that.

A majority of titles from Japan during that period weren’t JRPGs. The Xbox lacked a lot of titles and when it did get one, it didn’t get the others. I don’t know why you’re being a colossal faggot about this widely known fact.

Who the hell plays Halo for campaign? I mean I played the campaign. It was OK I guess. It dragged on literally for fucking ever, but it's all endemic of western games. The single player "game" is actually a movie, you play it once, maybe more or some levels you thought were cool. But the actual game part you keep playing is the multiplayer mode.

A game like Half Life whose definitive experience is the single player is different. I never thought highly of Halo's campaign and always found it boring.

two betrayals should've been a better level, but outside that it's an awesome campaign. Halo 2 was hit or miss depending if you liked the arbiter. but chiefs missions were great, still a great fps title. oh and you can enjoy it online now if you wanted to.

xbox chads have never stopped winning. one of my favorite dunks ever was picking up cheap duke controllers in akihabara from a smug nip, only for him to change his tune once he realized he was underselling all their xbox stuff.

Only DoA3 and Ninja Gaiden are Japanese, but the Xbox does have more Japanese games than that. They had MGS2, Fatal Frame 1&2, Silent Hill 2, Breakdown, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, GunValkyrie, Shenmue 2 & Phantom Crash.

But there's hundreds of Japanese games that Xbox missed, that the PS2 had.
