I can't think of any other waterpark building game that topped it.

pretty much the platonic ideal expansion
gives you a way to experience your favorite game again with new classes and skills and items
plus a new chapter to explore
yes, I know the reality isn't as sweet as my memories of it
it's probably mostly cut content that should've been in the original game (?)
it could've gone much further, with more weapons and new skills for existing classes (we got synergies and runes but... eeh)
and I definitely am not as enamored with the skinner box as I was when I was 14
but at the time it felt really good

That wasn't LoD on release, that was at least somewhat after launch, right?

Apart from the new, fully-fledged campaign, it only adds a few units and upgrades, but boy do they make a HUGE difference. The original game without the new additions is fucked balance-wise, as Terran and Protoss have glaring weaknesses but Zerg has relatively few. Terran in particular is turbo fucked against Zerg without the Medic. Now, every race has an answer or two to just about anything the other two races can throw at them. Muta spam getting annoying in TvZ and PvZ? Add a few Valkyries/Corsairs. Bio armies getting too big and powerful to handle thanks to the new Medic in ZvT? The Lurker's got your back, and faster Ultralisks give you added offensive power. Battlecruisers and Carriers are too much to handle in higher numbers? You can actually hit them now with Goliaths with an upgrade, Devourers hit them hard and make them squishier to boot, and Dark Archons can outright steal them (or do massive damage and take out their best weapon in the case of BCs).

The campaign is also good in that there's a good bit of variety, and it's nice every race got new missions, though I kinda wish they had added more than just one new FMV per race. It's also harder at points, especially the Zerg campaign toward the end. And I'm sorry to say that I feel the writing got a bit weaker, with just about everyone but Kerrigan getting plot-induced stupidity and getting played and betrayed at every turn. Still, definitely very memorable.

Is 3 retro? I don't think it is.

You could argue VC is an expansion to GTAIII being it in the same engine and SA is a sequel due to heavy engine modification

There's no need for one. I'm playing the original version on modern Windows with CD audio intact and no issues.

I never played D2 before LoD but I can't even imagine how barebones it must've felt compared to everything LoD introduced. Especially with how rushed A4 feel compared to A5.

man, i remember when battle.net first implemented distributed downloading in order to make getting patches easier. obviously after shit like napster already existed but i'm pretty sure it was before torrents really became a thing.

anyway, synergies were an awesome addition, even i it meant i had to restart my sorceress to take advantage of them. iirc they made necromancers actually playable too.
