The craze over animal mascots was huge during AFAIK the mid 80s and 90s (although it started long before). Sport team mascots, video games, cereal boxes, etc.
Everyone I knew back in the day watched and loved Space Jam along the Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, Chip & Dale: RR, Swat Katz, Biker Mice from Mars, Animaniacs, Ren & Stimpy and a long etc.
Then like all good things it faded out and was mostly replaced with something else (Xtreme stuff with human characters) around the mid 00s IIRC.
