We need to go on a quest to find the twilight dragon, the cursed wave approaches.
God this game was so good for atmosphere and immersion. The fact that some of the NPCs had basic arcs as you go through the parts is a nice touch. It is a shame this series is locked up in a Bandai Namco vault. They could do so much with it now.

Sadly, SAO makes more money for Bamco with normalfags (because anime is no longer niche) and waifufags (even if Asuna is the canon one people still try to push for other girls) while .hack is more about focusing on "online" and "MMORPG" as concepts and trying to figure out what makes them what they are.
I'm okay with G.U. focusing on Haseo's and Atoli's progress through entire series (thus the Grow Up as the name of series) while everything else gets less spotlight (except maybe the mystery of Tri-Edge), but the fact that third game is kinda spent on random stuff (because most of answers for important stuff were given in the second game) with a "somehow, Cubia has returned" twist left a bad taste in my mouth.
Another major issue I have with G.U. is that its new in-game lore is pointless - there's only one story-related quest (with Antares, or was it Rogue Class Change quest) where you need to answer lore-related questions... and that's it, the actual new World lore is never relevant in G.U. (and AIDA is a literally who virus that just eventually disappears). But in IMOQ it's only at the start that you think "haha, Key of Twilight, haha Cursed Wave, haha funny lore" only to quickly learn that you're basically fighting against the game itself and all that lore has meaning behind it (and it stays so until the very end).
Both IMOQ and G.U. got the atmosphere of "playing MMO while not pretending that it's not MMO and real life doesn't exst" very well with forums, but IMOQ got the relevancy of The World itself way better than G.U.
I tend to act like Link and Thanatos Report never happened.

It is, in a way. The background is a underhanded explainer to what Jun(Pi's brother) did to the original version of the game and how they recovered from that. Mixed in with an epic fantasy story. Killing the gods with the goddess "Aurora's" power. Describes him ripping apart the Morganna system. They were trying to find the real Aura after she went to sleep in the deep web. So they had to gather the parts of Morgans that were lost. Leading to avatars and epitaph users.

GU has its faults with everyone not liking Haseo at first. But if you follow the media along and know who the characters are in real life.
Even though he lost his memory of being Sora in R1, Haseo still acts like him.
Continuity of characters like in .Hack has never been done till things like Trails in the Sky started at least to my knowledge of JRPGs.
Wiseman's attitude in the first set of games is expanded upon in GU with Yata. Because they are the same guy playing 2 separate characters. Just a change of face and character class.

The rest of the root towns just couldn't compete.
Infection is what actually made me want to play all 4 games.

Suikoden 2 had a bunch of returning characters.

I can't remember if they were part of the plot or not Suikoden does not really flesh out a lot of the characters that well.

I saw a lot of my former self in Haseo so I really enjoyed seeing him become more mature, but yeah the Cubia thing definitely felt a little half baked. They could have done more with the in game lore but I'm still glad they came up with it even if it was underutilized. I liked reading about it and seeing the artwork they made to go along with it. As for AIDA you might want to watch G.U. Returner if you haven't already, but I don't think it would change your mind on the games. I think we would all prefer those entries not exist as well, but at least Link had a few good songs and character designs. I really enjoyed the Grand Whale themes but the game itself was pretty bad, in fact it was quite possibly the worst game I've ever completed
