Did going multiplat ruin Sonic Heroes?

According to legend, Sonic Heroes was originally going to be on Gamecube and XBox only. However, Sony told SEGA the same thing they had told Capcom numerous times: “Release this on Playstation 2 or you'll never be allowed to release games on a Sony brand console ever again”. The PS2 was the dominant console that generation and being prevented from releasing titles on it could doom a company. However, SEGA was terrible at programming for the PS2. They had even produced a number of Dreamcast titles in the past that flat-out could not be done on PS2. But now, SEGA had to take a title they had already partially finished and move it from it's own proprietary engine to something that could easily be ported to all three consoles: Renderware. This sudden engine shift probably put them far behind schedule and messed up any chance to really polish the game as much as it needed to be. This caused SEGA to produce yet another sub-Adventure title.

No I think Sonic Heroes's design ruined Sonic Heroes

Sonic Heroes was ruined by the fact that it was made by an inexperienced team on a tight deadline.

Heroes needed a lot of work redone but it still made them cash regardless of the sinkholes.
I would think this is the 3D equivalent of Knuckles' Chaotix, considering both games were team effort based and had to be switched over to different platforms/engines a bunch of times.

Heroes did better than the last 2 3D outings (not counting the modern releases)
A more polished and prepared Heroes would kick it to number #1, but they just had to do another gamble right after Heroes (Shadow '05, still a good game)

The game barely run on the PS2 so I doubt it held back the GameCube and Xbox versions.

>Did going multiplat ruin Sonic Heroes?
Pretty sure the release schedule ruined Heroes, a story that will repeat itself with the infamous 06 game.

This game works fine on the Gamecube and it's obvious that it was developed for the GC first and foremost. You act like Sega is some child with down's syndrome, they are industry veterans and the inability to adapt is entirely their fault

They basically were shaken down by the mob and forced to do business with them. I don't blame Sega for trying to keep to its schedule despite the new requirements.

Yeah I think being multi plat did fuck this game up. That engine they used fucking sucks. The game plays like shit feels like shovelware, and that transfers directly into shadow the hedgehog too. I'm sure they could have done a better job and still had something that was multi platform friendly. But in this specific case it would have been more fun if it was all from scratch. Not sure sega could even afford to make their own engine at this point

Notice how none of that applied to Shad05 and it turned out solid but internet culture proceeded to mald at it.

AM2 is not sonic team. *sonic team* was bad at coding for PS2 and preferred the gamecube due to its more similar architecture.

Source on that? I'm curious because there were a number of Sega games released for the Gamecube and/or Xbox that never got PS2 releases.

Yeah old game development used to be segregated. Look at wrestling games for example, Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox got different games entirely because you needed people that understood different hardware types because they WERE actually different. Then by 360/PS3 era, these consoles got the exact same game.

developing the game for ps2 isn't why 90% of the game is designed for 4 year olds with the characters constantly narrating what buttons you need to press like an episode of dora the explorer.

it was ruined by being a sonic game that isn't on the genesis.

This exact same story is supposedly what happened with Turok Evolution, though I'm not exactly sure if either is true.

I have this schizo theory that sega made the GOTTA GO FAST marketing to screw with all the copycats on purpose.
Sonic is an extension of the basic idea of mario that you get good and have fun by mastering simulating the physics of the character in your head and watching your mind simulation unfolding onscreen.
But with the GOTTA GO FAST, no one sees it and we get shit like bubsy.

However at some point sega forgot and drank their own poison.

Sonic Heroes was ruined by Sega. The fact that game only had 2 level designers is just baffling.

Because the missions were a waste of time.

Going fast was the one thing the Megadrive did well over the SNES, so there was a whole marketing angle to emphasizing how fast a game could go.
In actuality, second to second Sonic gameplay isn't even that fast, and it isn't really the point. Every game past 2 will have set pieces where they put you in a tube or something, and you get to see Sonic wizzing around really fast for a few seconds, and then it's back to normal gameplay.
Sega 100% drank their own coolaid when they decided Sonic was supposed to be going fast all of the time.

Last I heard they started development on Dreamcast, in which case I would say Sega did more damage to this game than anyone else.

Because it's an entire game made out of Heroes' Chaotix missions, which were among the worst parts of that game.

SONIC KINOES is based, so I don't know wtf any of you are talking about...
>b-b-but physics worse!
no one gives a shit. this game is hype as hell for having teamwork gameplay. it's the culmination of 15 years of sonic lore (even though I think the shadow shit is gay). It's the MGS4 of Sonic

lost.

who the fuck ever asked for teamwork gameplay?
Shadow just being alive again, and Sonic barely responding to it is a pretty big insult to people invested in lore, also. That game feels like a soft reboot of the Sonic universe.

I tried to play Sonic Heroes recently and got bored because the levels are long as fuck and you have to repeat them so many times. If they were going to add so many teams they should had more variety.

Bitch, sonic team was bad at going even the Megadrive. All the TAS runs of Sonic 1-3 are basically some glitch to make the camera overflow and warp you to the ending. Sonic 3 was so bad, the manual explicitly stated that Robotnik has some traps that can get you stuck in walls and the only way out is to reset the game. IN THE MANUAL.
