I figured it was because Sakaguchi was gone, they could finally play the forbidden music and make a direct sequel to a mainline game. That and they were still reeling from the spirits within and enix merger so a good little asset reuse game was on the cards. We're just lucky they made it good.

it was the first mainline final fantasy i thought was absolute shit, 9 came close but it was servicable. This game is trash, it's a shame because the job system is fun but nothing about the game made me push forward to see the end, instead it just kept getting worse.

I loved it. There's a fucking math minigame in it too that made me feel retarded, but it was cool that they made it. It feels like they wanted to have blitzball but then realized the game wouldn't be accepted well if they had these girls in bikini playing blitzball
