Played the BFG edition and the only thing they FIXED was the memed to death retarded flashlight/weapon swapping.

The entire game is retarded.

The biggest problem was that it deviated from being fun to being "immersive" and focusing on graphics. DOOM 3 was never good. It never will be. It's an objectively shit game.

Like the plasma rifle not only sounds like shit it almost has the same power level as the SMG. And the chain gun is dogshit that behaves like some heavy aircraft canon. Almost all the weapons do the same damage with the exception of the grenades.

It's like the middle part of the game is missing and instead they stretched out the first level to last for like 20 levels and it just drags on way too long. They already had some outdoors parts in the game, I don't know why they didn't add some more outdoors stuff. Like maybe made it where you had to traverse larger distances across the Mars surface between a few different isolated buildings instead of just being in basically one building the whole time.

I reckon the first few stages are good, and there's one or two near the end where there's huge amounts of blood and stuff everywhere, those was decent, and the hell stages were ok. But the whole middle like 90% of the game is really boring.

In spite of all that, The Lost Mission is great and the best piece of official Doom 3 content. These days its now playable outside of the BFG edition through ports like dhewm3 so it’s all water under the bridge at this point.

I don't know what to tell you man, I never had an issue figuring out where to go, I have never gotten lost in a doom game, Wolf3D I sure did tho. You are whining that the game doesn't tell you everything and clutter your screen with nonsense, you can say everything looks the same but that doesn't make you correct, I can not think of a single instance where someone even might get lost in this game, it's super linear and the path forward is always obvious. I did see some pipes and was thinking the game wants me to jump and move on them.

I found a secret cash of armor there however I figured that the game did not want me to go this way.

Tried to walk up the pipes to the next level because elevator broken...

I didn't like it because the guns felt weak and the enemies didn't react to them, the structure was repetitive and tiring (literal monster closets aren't scary AND the demons can literally teleport so why are they waiting behind walls), and the visuals in a lot of areas were pretty dull. It also feels like that surf Dracula meme where you only go to hell for like 3 seconds right at the end.

The enemies react to your attacks, some more or less than others.

I think I'm one of the few people who likes this game without much equivocation. I don't really consider it a "Doom game" gameplay wise, and the gameplay is fine, but for me it's 100% about the atmosphere. I find it an absolutely gorgeous game to look at, I probably spend more time looking at the environment than anything else. I also happen to like finding and reading the PDAs. Together they do a great job of making you feel like you're in a real base that's slowly being taken over by hell.

That said, the Soul Cube is a terrible gimmick that basically ruins the already limited challenge once you get it, and the final boss fight is among the worst I've ever played. And Nightmare mode is an absolute joke, it forces you to speedrun the game rather than make the enemies harder / more numerous.

Still, I play it every 4 or 5 years just for the vibe.

How are people still seething about doom3 20 years later? When it came out I thought it was incredibly impressive. It scared the shit out of me too. I had the Xbox port but my dad bought the pc version so I played both. it wasn’t a perfect game but no game is. All I know at the time was that it was really cool to me and that’s all that matters. replay value? Doom 1 and 2 are better. but if you were there in 2005 it being so different, having such excellent atmosphere, it being so scary, and everythinf looking so cool and fleshed out was like jumping into the future when you compared it to prior doom or quake games. it wss one of the earliest games I played where I felt like I was REALLY there. not just playing a game.

Not really, and for better and worse D3 was still closer than a lot of its contemporaries: You at least still had a full weapon selection, a large and varied enemy roster, and not much that got in the way of that besides audio logs (no leveling, no perks, no skilltrees). Serious Sam and its clones were halfway there as well, but they arguably had even less of an emphasis on "classic Doom" level progression.

doom 3 was very impressive when it came out, some aspects of it still are today. but it would have benefitted from anoth 3-6 months of playtesting and balancing. yes i agree they concentrated too much on graphics over gameplay. but regardless of your opinion the graphics of doom 3 were half a generation ahead of almost anything else out at the time. today it still looks visually impressive in some areas and i would argue it has a better art direction than many modern games today. when doom 3 came out it was being compared to other FPS games from the last decade like halo 1/2, unreal, half life, quake 3 or, etc. it almost looks like FEAR and frankly it was ahead of its time and would have been a better product if it was released around then i think, it would have been more at home during the 360 generation than original xbox, would have given people more time to upgrade their rigs too.

anyway the gameplay is decent, but it needed more balancing and playtesting youre right. graphics are great youre just being weird. the gameplay is fun the problem really is that unlike doom 1 and doom 2 it didnt have the same level of custom content made for it. if doom 1 anddoom 2 never had custom wads made for it the way they did they never would have been such legendary games. i frankly rate the base campaigns of doom 1 and doom 2 to both be about a 6.5/10 and the fan content is what elevates the games to 10/10 titles. doom 3 really needed that but never got it. when the game came out i was in HS so i was in its target audience and i found it scarier in a tense way than other games that market themselves as horror games like silent hill resident evil, condemned, etc.

doom 3 when it came out was very impressive for a variety of reasons and the ambitious and creative things it did outweighed the flaws the game had for many people at the time. if you dont like it thats fine. for the time i give it an 8/10 as i said before it seems unfinished but it was an experience worth experiencing at launch and was half a gen ahead of other games. but today its more of a 6.5/10 because it is flawed in many ways. like many many games talked about here with an extra few months it could have been much better because the potential was there. at the bare minimum i can say it left a strong impression on me at launch and thats mroe than most games where i play them once and dont remember anything about them or ever think about them again after. im gonna replay it again later this year.

They bullshit teleport AKA the game spawns them in behind you and this is not the in lore teleport I know one time that a human marine who in lore has no teleportation manically was behind me, the game spawned him in to do the same cheep trick of monster behind you shoots you also.
