Honestly it is so funny seeing people here complaining over prices, because even for their popularity retro game collecting is mid level when it comes to collectables.
Most everything is under $50. There is only one instance of something over 100k (nwc carts), one real instance of over $50,000 (stadium events), and very few examples of anything over $1000. Even all those limited consoles are $500
This is really cheap for a collecting hobby. It is mid level because it has a lot and a higher base so it is not the bottom level of collecting, but a hell of a lot more have most expensive collecting prices before even getting to the real high end stuff

Anon, it's typical for even the best game stores with the nicest staff to overprice items 100-200%, it's part of how they survive.
I just saw a game that is worth no more than 150 bucks with a sticker asking for almost double. The game is not rare at all too. Don't want to mention the game because they come here too!

Games are unique in this regard because you can literally experience everything the game itself has to offer and more for free in 99% of cases. It's hard to justify paying $50 for something you can do for free, let alone $1000.

Except the logistics of emulation, especially for a TV setup, are incredibly complicated compared to a console. Even when you think it’s just “plug a computer in”, what kind of computer? Software? OS? Configuration? Proper output to a CRT without scaling? Now you have to trudge through AI slop or useless reddit threads to find any answers. Yes, the games themselves are free, but the hardware isn’t, and time is never free.

>Physical media is for faggots.
Only a jew would say this.

20 years down the line, the "retro" market for zoomers is going to be hilarious when half the games are unplayable because you need an online connection and the disk itself doesn't actually contain the game.

Ignore the double spacing, suspecting a reddit AI bot adapted to use here.
Not even joking about that since everything is filled with bots and most of internet is done for bots, not joking about that after 5 minutes trying to download something from romhacking still stuck on cloudflare shit "verifying you are human" which doesn't work because use AI bot logic not considering humans will block cookies, will block google trackers, will block ads and use private windows for anything not main (so is clean with no data to sell).

Retro gaming will never reach the levels of pure autism of Japanese car fags spending 20k on some random car part from an obscure aftermarket manufacturer that was advertised only once inn august 1996 edition of a low volume magazine
