Every new popular Metroidvania that comes out just underscores how good this actually was.
The exploration, the balance between combat and platforming, the storytelling. Why hasn't anyone fully picked up its torch?

Majority of people have troubles with navigation, so this subgenre is not for them. Doesn't help that modern gamers expect quest arrows, even GBA Metroids caved and added those.

It's short though. 9 hours for a completionist playthrough. I guess you could wring more enjoyment out of it with cheevos and romhacks/randomizers

I don't care what your chart says, you didn't play the game if you think 9 hours is a fair estimate for Super Metroid.
First 100% playthrough shouldn't take you more than 6 hours. And that's generous.

The first time I beat Super Metroid I had like 15 hours on my save file, which doesn't count all the times I restarted after dying to bosses or spent way too long exploring and then died before finding another save room and had to restart. Those How Long To Beat times are not based on realistic blind first playthroughs, they're based on ideal conditions of a player already knowing where to go and never dying. That said, the fact that you CAN beat it so quickly IF you know what you're doing is exactly what makes it so replayable, which was even more important in the early 90s when you didn't necessarily have a whole lot of games at home, so you were bound to replay the ones you had anyway. Games weren't so disposable back then, most people weren't playing through each game one time and then never touching it again.

Nine hours first play-through 100%
Six hours first playthrough for better ending
Three hours first playthrough for best ending
Several more hours and attempts for 100% and best ending.
Several more hours fiddling with attempting various sequence breaks just to see what might happen.

for the average modern gamer to enjoy. I got filtered hard by Harmony of Dissonance, Zero Mission, and even two non-VR Metroids back when I was new to hardcore games, but now that I know how to recognize the patterns these games throw down, and slow down and think about my tools in addition to note taking, I have loads of fun with them. Super expects you to recognize patterns that indicate where a breakable block will be and arguably more importantly was designed to be played with a physical manual that tells you the controls. Downloading a PDF, taking pictures of your screen/writing things down for later (not doing this bit me in the ass during Prime 3), slowing down, and major backtracking are so much work compared to playing any modern game with modern design comforts that a game directly inspired by these old nonlinear platformers would appeal exclusively to enthusiasts

I baffles me how they hit the nail on the head with this game, it honestly killed the entire franchise. There hasn't been a single metroid game that comes close to the level this one did. It genuinely is the closest a game has ever come to a 10/10 for me. This is coming from a Sega fan boy at that.

I still consider Super Metroid along with the original Quake to be the quintessential video game, the sort of thing you point to as the most all-encompassing example of what video games are when asked. Like every part of it is well executed and plays to the medium's strengths, from the gameplay, to the atmosphere, to the world design, even down to the audio.

There are other games I would find more replayable, others that would have an unmatched spectacle which can wow people, and more still that have a more compelling story, but nothing does it all as well as Super Metroid. I fully expect it to be enshrined as art in the same way the Mona Lisa is in a century.

Because they are slop cobbled together on some game maker engine. Even if the design was good (it never is), it has a cheap look and feel that intrinsically conveys a lower quality experience.

Honestly my favorite part of Super is all of the sequence breaking shenanigans you can do. As far as I can tell, no other game comes close to it in that regard.
Anonymous No.12013927 [Report] >>12014161
>>12013824
People try to say that Zero Mission has just as much, but the difference is that most of what you can do in Super just involves creative use of the tools at your disposal like bomb jumping, wall jumps, shinespark, etc; you apply your skills in unconventional ways to access skips and sequence breaks, which makes you feel like you're getting one over on the game and outsmarting the designers. In ZM, the vast majority of sequence breaks and skips just involve locating hidden breakable blocks that open up some new prescribed path that just feels like a planned alternate route the designers built in.
Anonymous No.12014161 [Report] >>12015192

yeah in Super you can do absurd shit like reverse boss order, purely through clever use of game mechanics to sequence break
nothing else in the series comes close to that

I think reverse boss order is done through abusing glitches, which obviously isn't intended. By that logic, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is equally as open because you can use the card glitch and another glitch using a summon to teleport into the final boss room and win in less than 5 minutes

I probably could have made my own thread to ask this, but whatever.
I'm playing Zero Mission right now, it's the first Metroid game that I've played. I have to ask, is Zero Mission's atmosphere a notable departure from the rest of the series? From what I understand, Metroid games are supposed to almost be horror games in terms of their atmosphere, but I'm not really getting that out of ZM thus far.

The overall vibe is very Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) inspired. I first played ZM over 20 years ago and it sent me down a rabbit hole of autistic obsession with those movies that positively affected my career path.

Your understanding is warped by listening to retarded exaggerative zoomers who are scared of their own shadows. They would also lead you to believe that Mario 64 is a horror game.

Only Metroidvanias at the same level are ESA, HK and Silksong (not a meme, I like HK and its sequel).
Even then I think Super Metroid has superior level design and atmosphere.

Your best bet for "similar experiences" would be ROM Hacks, such as Subversion, Vitality, Ascent, and Hyper Metroid.
Those are very good and better than many Metroid games even.
