Why do people consider this one of the all time classic SEGA games? It's literally 20+ levels of just walking around and picking things up, and all the levels look the same.

I don't get it either. I played it for the first time on a PSP back when the emulation scene first started becoming popular and lost interest after like 10 minutes kek. Had no idea what the point even was.

You would have to have something called "friends" to understand. Drugs also help.

This. It's just a comfy game to chill to with a fun, silly aesthetic. Doesn't require much thought, doesn't get frustratingly intense and doesn't need skill or technique to properly enjoy. Plus the soundtrack is kino.

-Fun gifts system you learn while playing
-Great difficulty curve starting easy but going nuts near the end.
-Opposed to what you said, early levels are basic but get more varied in enemies/hazards as they go on.
-Rng elements that make it fresh every time.
-Great co-op/party game experience
The only thing it needed is a short mode with 10-12 levels unlocked with a code, otherwise it's pretty much perfect.

>simplistic yet satisfying level design that doesn't get carried away with gimmicks like its sequels
>glorious visuals, music, and sound effects that were the epitome of early 90s retro
>soulful dreamlike bonus rounds that appropriately appear AFTER completing the level
>best boss music of the series
Yeah, i'm thinking it was a gemmy.

OP is a SNES drone who can't see the appeal of a simple but fun multiplayer arcade game, because it's not one of the five tendie games he's been playing on repeat since the 90's. Many such cases.

Anyway it was an appealing game that came out soon after Sonic, so a lot of kids who were newly getting into the Genesis rented it. It and the characters got a lot of promotion from Sega of America as a major Genesis game. So yeah it was mostly time, place and marketing rather than gameplay

SOR1 and SOR2 have the GOAT boss themes, and the GOAT soundtracks in general.

Sonic 1 isn’t like that at all past the first zone. It’s actually pretty slow and constantly stops you and it’s a common complaint.

The game is boring if you play it alone, but if you play it with friend, oh boy it's a blass, unironicaly top 5 multiplayer of the generation

did OP just out himself as not having any friends to sit on the couch and play ToeJam & Earl with him?

Around stage 12-13 it starts becoming over-the-top retardedly difficult with unavoidable ambulances, tornadoes, monster mail boxes and boomer lawnmowers and 90% of the land becomes quicksand. The only way to win is spamming teleport randomizers so you get in a lucky spot near the elevator's door. Around stage 17 you get bees on the starting stage point location that don't go away, good luck with that.
