I'm Playing Silent Hill 2 OG For the First Time
I'm playing Silent Hill 2 OG For the firs the first time on Hard. It's Enhanced Edition. Any tips for me to survive the horrors of Silent Hill and not wandering around like an autist getting killed by monsters all the time?

Should have gone normal combat and hard riddles because the combat isn't remotely fun or hard regardless of settings but it's whatever. Just enjoy the game and take it slow to soak in the atmosphere.

just play the shit on normal difficulty if it is your first time playing. unless you meant first time playing hard after beating it. and play the regular game. stop fucking with this game, it was fine on ps2 and the greatest hits / xbox restless dreams version isn’t even necessary. og game with gritty filter that is default on first playthrough.

hard combat is the better experience for most of the game. the enemies on hard while not truly challenging are more conducive to a stressful, draining atmosphere of a horror game at a basic level. the issue is a few problem areas where the game's balancing falls off a cliff. a hospital chase section that is frankly legitimately broken, and then a late game boss that's absurdly spongey. if you need some amount of struggle to get into a horror game it's probably worth trudging through those sections but if not you should probably just put it on normal and be done with it.

I actually was just playing the Saigo No Uta version yesterday.

Can't get over how genius the opening couple of minutes are.

>starts you out in a serene, calm location with comforting music and a bit of fog
>Slowly, as you proceed farther the fog becomes denser and the music more ambient
>the ambient music becomes more ominous as you hear unsettling noises off somewhere to the left, right, and potentially right in front of you letting your mind make up any kind of horror it wants adding to the genuine spooky factor
>finally get a bit of a reprieve when you hit the graveyard of all places
>get a cutscene with two characters awkwardly feeling eachother out for a moment before both realize they are desperate to find a similar thing
>proceed even further into the unknown after that hearing even more unsettling noises but never seeing a hint of anything
>so foggy you can't really get your bearings until a dirt road just dumps you right into the iconic town itself showing you just how lost you really are
>finally you find something
>a trail of blood
>game doesn't hold your hand and you are just naturally drawn to following the trail
>find it leading to some blocked off tunnel
>in the cutscene that follows it never hides the monster but places them in a spot James naturally doesn't see allowing us to really take it in and build the dread

It's juat genius. The amount of thought that went into the beginning is insane and at no moment does it jumpscare you or use hyper violence/gore to get a cheap thrill. None of it is even traditionally scary and it relies way more on the sound direction, ost, and your own imagination to build the horror. There really is nothing like it. Makes me sad F misses the point so damn much.

He's full of it. That opening and the cutscenes from FFX blew people's minds in fall 2001, the two games that made sure PS2 stayed ahead of Xbox and Gamecube. People couldn't shut up about how it was the scariest game of all time. Unlike so many other games that are only seen as classics via historical revisionism, Silent Hill 2 dropped and was immediately regarded as one of the greatest games of all time in a way nothing had been an instant classic since Final Fantasy 7. Combined with Gran Turismo 3, there was basically no reason to buy any other console in 2001. The hot RPG, Racing game, and Horror game were all on PS2.

I still remember my cousin saying, "You thought Code Veronica had good graphics and was scary, huh? Check this out." and starting a new SH2 game. By the time he got to the monster in the tunnel I was about to have a heart attack.

Man, I know you are just being a contrarian but SH4 is kind of a mess in general. Great presentation with a plot that fizzles out and ridiculously annoying gameplay quirks like the minuscule inventory compared to all of the shit you are expected to constantly haul around.
The best part of the game is the opening trailer.

If you had infinite inventory space you'd have no reason to return to your room
The real problem of the game is the lack of darkness/limited visibility, backtracking escort mission and stock monster sfx

Sure, but it turned anything spooky into frustration since you are constantly having to run past immortal enemies to drop off more shit that you need to clean your apartment later.
It makes the game feel like frustrating busywork and that isn't scary or engaging.
The escort mission and stock monster effects were also really fucking bad though I'll give you that.

Happy to see a based post like this. I absolutely agree. Silent Hill 2's opening 10 or so minutes is some of the best shit I have ever seen in gaming. Silent Hill 1 had a great opening as well that builds tension. While 1 gets more praise for its opening I feel as if 2's opening probably would be a lot more lost on anyone unfamiliar with the games or who has shit opinions though.

But to make a point, I think SH 1 and 2 have the strongest opening to a survival horror game ever. And possibly the strongest openings of any game ever period. Really sets up the mood on what kind of games you will be playing.

> run past immortal enemies

if all enemies can be killed by a few whacks, it wouldn't be scary.

They aren't scary when they turn into a grocery run nuisance either. They lose their effectiveness when you are running back to the item box every ten minutes to dump out your tiny inventory.
