Succeeded despite SoA, once Nintendo of America got rolling they ended up running circles around them.

As much an artifact of the late 80s/early 90s "cool" as Michael Jackson or Bart Simpson, as well as mid-90s "weird" like Ren n Stimpy and Lenny Kravitz.

Lightning in a bottle, literally. It was the best power to price ratio for a home arcade hardware for many years, up until the 5th gen. The Mega Drive brought the arcade experience to the livingroom better than anything else at the time, and developers took advantage of that power, and customers bought it for that.

Mark Cerny specifically. Once he was gone SoA went to hell.

No, it was the winner of the "can it run galaxian?" race.
Galaxian created the concept of tilemap that you can scroll in a pixel precision with sprites on top, every japanese arcade manufacturer ever including nintendo copied it 1:1, and the race for creating a home console that can do all that had begun.
Nintendo won the race by finding a way to make custom chips that can do it cheap enough and mass produced the thing.
Nothing before the famicom could run the arcades well enough, it was all compromised shit.

It was a fumble more than a fluke
Gave big boy Nintendo a run for its money but drops the ball with big ticket add-ons
The Sega CD was as much as the entire goddamn console it was attached to and only sells to customers who already own a console.
Should've just slapped a geni inside the Sega CD and sold it as a new console

There was the Wondermega, but it cost more than buying an MD and CD separately because they added a bunch of extra bullshit.

No, Master System and Dreamcast were both good for what they were, the Game Gear and the Nomad were impressive hardware wise and the former had some good original titles, the SEGA CD and 32x were the real problems, despite having a few good titles... the real problem was the Saturn, had it not failed that bad, Dreamcast would've succeded a lot more too.

No just madden. Madden was the genesis killer app not sonic. Half a million dads ran out and bought a genesis "for the kids" when this dropped. The SNES hadnt landed yet and this genesis title was the birth of decades of annual EA sports dominance. This single game changed the entire home console industry.

Disclaimer: There was an earlier madden game on computers back in 1988 but they threw it all away and built madden '90 for genesis from scratch.

This.

It's crazy how much people underestimate the importance of sports video games around here.

That's not a fluke. It sold because of long established corporate brand recognition
IBM wasn't a new company, they even helped Germany with equipment to round up jews:
>The Nazis made extensive use of Hollerith punch card and alphabetical accounting equipment and IBM's majority-owned German subsidiary, Deutsche Hollerith Maschinen GmbH (Dehomag), supplied this equipment from the early 1930s. This equipment was critical to Nazi efforts to categorize citizens of both Germany and other nations that fell under Nazi control through ongoing censuses. These census data were used to facilitate the round-up of Jews and other targeted groups, and to catalog their movements through the machinery of the Holocaust, including internment in the concentration camps

/vr/ has too many collectors or people groomed by youtubers who use rare games as background props. The reason real gamers went for sports games was because a) they were normies and b) you got months of league play/seasons plus the best PvP content you could get on a home console.

Even goldeneye multiplayer in its prime was just a taste of what normal sports gamers had been enjoying for a decade already. The reason any console came with 2 or 4 controllers was becaus of sports titles. Simple as.

The real fluke with this was Microsoft securing the software deal over Digital Research
