I played it for a few months when it came out for PS2. Didn't think it was worth the monthly price so I sold the have and hdd. Kept the modem, got a lot of good use out of it. Would be cool if the game could be played single player like PSO.

I was way too busy playing Halo 2 and WoW.

the more i've asked veterans the more they say the game is still entirely worth picking up
covid saw a huge increase in people playing it which led to a soft rebirth of the game (which i fuckin missed sadly)
trusts and shit exist but it's very much an mmo you can still have casual conversations with people in or not use wikis and just ask people how stuff works to figure it all out
plus it's still final fantasy, the world and exploration to look at cool shit is still there and the music is great

In ffxi EVERY item has a use. With infinite inventory and storage spaces these items would have absolutely no value. Since everyone has limited inventory you could list a random crafting or weird item on the auction house and a higher level player who needs it will buy it. If everyone had no storage limits these items would sell for pennies.

The walking speed is AWFUL in FF11. When that new Horizon server came out, I tried it, and everything was all like HURRAY meanwhile I was over here nigga this is molasses shit.... all you do in FF11 is walk, over here and over there, and back. The server I played for a long time had faster walking. It's called Era. Unfortunately the server is pretty fucking dead and now my character is stuck there forever and I sure as fuck am not gonna make a new character on a slower walk speed

I used to trash talk a lot while playing StarCraft and Diablo 2, but I ended up getting permabanned from SC2 and D3 for taking it too far. It's no surprise they behave like that.

It came out. I tried it on release and it was interesting at least. Its fatal flaw is that the dev really wanted to prevent players from ruining content by just autistically grinding everything right off the bat and stomping through every content update with max level characters, which isn't a bad idea because runescape autists absolutely will do that, but the system for it just ended up being kind of dumb and unsatisfying. Basically, skills only apply to certain areas and moving to a new area replaces your old skills with a new set of essentially redundant skills. Like you have to train combat over again when you move to a new area, or "mining" gets replaced with "geology" and so on, and very little of what you do carries over so it's just kind of weird.

I kind of agree with what the dev was trying to do there but his solution really didn't work out great.

there was 0 attempt to even detect memory manipulation back then and the server trusted the client with practically everything, one of my favorite tools I wrote would let me pick up ground spawn items from anywhere in the zone, people would spend hours finding the perfect hiding spot to drop shit on the ground so they could log out and pick it up on an alt, meanwhile I'd be afk at the bank and come back to a full inventory of all kinds of expensive shit and you'd see people crying in ooc for whoever picked up a bag to please return it

When P99 first released I wrote a custom map tool (never got detected) and I realized that there were no range checks for NPC interactions. There was some quest where the NPC on one side of the zone gave you an item to hand to an NPC on the other side of the zone. Normally it wasn't worth doing, but in memory I just moved them side by side and spammed the shit out of it. Ended up with a thousand plat when normies were still counting their coppers. Never detected, apparently they weren't even looking for obscene amounts of coin. Maybe they thought I was one of the GMs' alts or something lmao.
