Pokemon, it's not even a contest.

Even at the time FF7 was just another FF but with better graphics and a lot of marketing, pokemon was something new.

Pokemon had it all.
The battle system was nuanced as hell. A lvl 23 Zubat could beat a lvl 100 Hitmochan if all of Hitmonchan's moves missed - which is possible!
Nothing can match the tension of battles. When I fought Giovanni I was terrified, all of Johto or Kanto or whatever could've been destroyed if I lost, but I didn't because I'm the ultimate pokemon master!
FF7 wouldn't be so famous if it weren't for Tifa's tits. Everyone talks about materia and party management, but they're just there for the boobies. Want real party management? I just gave up Leer for Vine Whip! I can't take that back whereas FF7fags can just rearrange materia again, pfft. I took down a whole band of thrives destroying the purity of pokemon battles. I only take a small fee when my mons trounce my opponent, they take it all (or so I've heard) after battling their mons to near-death (which I totally don't do, I swear).
And like, you have to choose your abilities really quickly in FF7. I need at least 50 seconds to decide between Pound or Growl with Clefairy - letting the enemy attack you if you take too long is actually bullshit.
Does FF7 have a Safari Zone? Is FF7 part of the best-selling media franchise of all time? Sales is an objective measurement. I rest my case.

Y'know, I don't think I've ever seen direct comparisons between these two games, at least not as any matter of course where I'd take note of it. Handheld and console games sort of occupied their own spaces from each other.

FF7 alone has sold over 15 million. Red alone sold around 10 million, RGB put together sold 30 million. FF7 also had huge rentals while Gameboy rentals were scarce, but we don't have solid figures on that. FF7 original sells more today than original RBG. Just some stats for anyone wondering, the argument itself is childish and a waste of time.
