Pre-NES Thread Reborn XII
Previous thread: >>11986381
Rules of the thread are simple:
>You can only talk about games and systems made before the US release of the NES (1985). Everything before it from the CRT Amusement Device to stuff like Marble Madness and Kung Fu Master is cool here. Later and homebrew ports for Pre-NES games on Pre-NES systems are allowed (e.g. Jr. Pac-Man was released in arcades in 1983 but the 2600 port came out in 1986)
>That's it.
How do I git gud at arcade Battlezone? Also how do you bind that game? My binds for my Dualsense controller are okay but I wanna know if I can do better.

Got a new PB for arcade Berzerk (still a shit score kek). You have to be constantly moving in this version and although that makes the gameplay more intense, it also makes it more difficult to kill the robots. It's a fine balance that this game executes perfectly.

That set 2? Respectable score for set 2, IMO, but pretty weak for set 1. They ramped up the difficulty in the second revision.

According to the compatibility list I use as a reference for my ROMs, it's revision RC31A so I assume it's set 1. Personally I'm used to the 2600 version so the arcade version feels crazy different to me (especially the diagonal shooting robots).
Anonymous No.12020403 [Report] >>12021332
>>12020346
RC31 would be the first release, RC31A would be the second. The robots are much harder, though Otto doesn't speed up later on.
My personal set 2 hi score is like 4,800, but on set 1 I have 11 thousand something

Kek I had no idea I was basically playing with weights on. I just thought the arcade version was generally harder.

The first revision was much less common n the arcades, actually. I like both of them, but the first is definitely easier. Apart from Evil Otto getting crazy fast at high levels.

What's the best way to play Spy Hunter? I could never get the controls to feel right in Mame

Have you tried using a steering wheel controller? The cabinet itself seems to have a steering wheel on it, but I don't know if it's just a gimmicky joystick or if it functions like an actual steering wheel.

I found the rom and played a little bit. It looks really fucking good for 1980. The gameplay is addicting too. I'm probably gonna sink a good few hours in this.

We hear a lot of 70s gaming in the US and Japan? But what was European gaming like in the 70s? That one driving game that was the inspiration for Atari's Night Driver is pretty much the only game I know of that came from Europe during that time, but there's gotta be more.

Starting play pitfall. Originally thought it was just a running and jumping simulator. But after reading the manual, I realize the game wants you to route all 32 treasures, and in order to do that you have to use the underground passage ways. And to go backwards instead of forwards.

I attempted that with a map. All I can say is good fucking luck because even with a map I gave up. Doing all that in 20 minutes is crazy.

What made people dislike Sky Skipper? It's not amazing but I wouldn't say it's awful and they made the right call to stop it's release.

Got a new high score in Mine Storm recently. 84065. This is impressive for me because I suck at video games. I also recently got my ColecoVision up and running again and have been using a Coleco Chameleon cartridge on it, which works great. Super cool to try games for shit like the Tandy TutorVision and.the SG1000

Yep. I've got a VecMulti for it but Mine Storm is one of my favorite games on the Vectrex ngl. It controls so well, and the fact that it's decided into discrete levels gives it a good sense of progression

I'm surprised that they were pretty much the only console manufacturers that had a built in game with their system. I think the Channel F has one and that's the only other system I can think of that does that(and I may be wrong).

Sega Master System had a built-in game, with several choices depending on which model you got.

No-Intro has dumps of these specific versions too (pic related), but I don't know if the games actually have any differences from the Card/Cartridge versions

But this is a Pre-NES thread though

damn your right. I had no idea the passage ways skipped levels. For you to make a map, you'd have to write down everything in every level in order to know which levels you skipped over in the passage ways. I am actually really impressed in this game, I had no idea it had this much depth.

Have you tried messing with the analog sensitivity settings in MAME, generally works fine for me. Alternatively try the incremental controls, I forgot how MAME calls them.

I just didn't find it exciting which I can imagine is a problem for a secondary arcade cabinet in 1981. Some pretty big hitters and fast playing alternative games. Maybe it would've done better as a 81/82 console release, but it's just not a game that jived well with players at the time.
Anonymous No.12033224 [Report] >>12033530
What are the best pre-NES games for someone born post NES to try? I had an atari 2600 at one point and we had fun fucking around in multiplayer with stuff like combat but I never really explored the library. What would be the best single player stuff to try? Fun multiplayer seems easy enough to find but I've never really played single player stuff that old besides Pitfall.

Zoomer here, pretty much anything from Activision is a guaranteed win, most Atari games are wins too, but the bad ones are pretty bad. My top 10 in no particular order is
>Battlezone
>Robot Tank
>Journey Escape
>Tax Avoiders
>Berzerk
>Ms. Pac-Man (pretty solid port compared to the Pac-Man port)
>Yars' Revenge
>Haunted House
>River Raid
>Cosmic Ark
