I liked the idea that they can hover around you and basically constantly hover over your shoulder as your little buddy.

For me, it's gotta be the Haunt'. Ghost Pokemon are my favorites in general, and Haunter has such a strong design and abilities. Having a mischievous ghost bro would be tons of fun.

damn, when did you play? I basically had no friends either but it was still relatively easy for me to find someone to trade and trade back the trade evolution pokemon during Pokemania. Granted if you played after pokemania died I'm sure it was more difficult, I coudln't find people to do trade evolution with for Gen2

I think my favorite Gen 1 pokemon is Kabuto. I like how spooky it looks. I kind of hate Kabutops as an evolution because nothing that I like about Kabuto carries over to it.

Zubat is a perfect design. Very cute and cool. I never really liked Golbat though, looks too goofy and cartoonish but at least they fixed it with Crobat.

All my favorite pokemon are "evil" coded

Mr. Mime. Admittedly, this has more to do with the TCG than the games, but I've always liked this guy. He's such a weirdo.

It might sound lame, but I think most of my favorites for the first two gens are the legendaries/mythicals.

Back then, a Pokémon being one of those really seemed important because there were so few. Mew and Mewtwo were the most powerful Pokémon (in lore), the three birds and Lugia had the power to turn the balance of nature on its head. Around gen 4, there started being too many legendaries and mythicals for it to still feel special. Ironically, the pseudo-legendaries have remained a far more exclusive class.

Additionally, the early legendaries got the best movies. 1-3 are all great and nothing else has reached the height that those did.

My favorite Eevee isn't even in genwun

Snorlax. In my 1st playthrough no matter how many times I tried I couldn't catch the first Snorlax I encountered, so I used the MasterBall on the other one assuming that's what the ball was intended for. No regrets.
In my 2nd playthrough I used both Snorlax on my team.

Ash not catching that Snorlax in season 1 was when I knew definitively he was a disappointing Pokemon trainer.

I always liked Farfetch'd, and I assumed it must be powerful because there's only 1. It was a bummer to learn it's actually one of the weakest in the game. Still, it's the coolest bird design in the game not including legendaries.
