the only thing funnier than releasing kabal so overpowered in vanilla mk3 was not fixing him at all in ultimate. they got rid of comboing from buzz saw which just made the move useless. a lot of people dont even realize he has that move because there is literally no point to ever use it. but who cares? he has a 1 frame startup move that beats everything and gives you half their life at least. you just have to wonder what was going thru these peoples minds

MK3 was very disappointing in every way upon release. Why didnt they just put fucking Scorpion in the game in the first place? I remember getting MK3 on Genesis having not played it in the arcades, and I was so let down.

i'm more perplexed at why the legacy collection needs 4 versions of MK3. trilogy or UMK3 should be more than enough for MK3 and wavenet just feels redundant since every game in the collection already has online play.

Don't know about MK3 but UMK3 was functionally extremely different on consoles. Maybe the Saturn port was "arcade accurate" (except you could still do juggles not in the arcade), but the 16-bit ports were closer to MK Trilogy Lite with a slightly larger roster and some different finishers. Noob Saibot got his own move list and specials, bosses were playable with cheats, Rain was included, Sheeva was taken out, all the UMK3 secret characters were unlocked from the start, etc.

it plays better but back when these games released people were way more concerned with the fatalities and just how "cool" the game was i would say. half of mk3's fatalities look unfinished. the animalities sucked and they should not have even bothered with those. in the end it doesnt really matter that much when umk3 is just miles more fun to actually play than mk1 or mk2 but i think thats why people say it was disappointing.

Ehh idk. You might think the lack of Outworld fighters makes it so, but it doesn't in the details since the story is literally about Outworld invading Earth

And people always overstate the "urban vibes" only like half the levels are streets and subways etc, the other half is still hell and gothic dungeons etc, and Shao Kahn and Motaro are still the bosses

Final revision of vanilla had less bugs than the rom upgrade's final revision. They were UI bugs that didn't affect gameplay, but still.

exactly what it means; sony paid for a rushed sequel to push hardware sales. then midway went back and finished the game, with ultimate and made sony fume by releasing ultimate on saturn. this in turn gave birth to trilogy.

yes, mk3 was on 16bit systems, but it was ass and sony didn't care about last gen. they wanted to push playstation sales and it sorta did. can't say it swayed many, but it showed everyone how much better then current gen was vs last gen.

basically it was a propaganda piece. but, as mentioned, it didn't last because ultimate came out. kinda funny tho, they tried what nintendo did with sf2ww and got the sf2sce/sf2hf treatment.

There were people who cared. MK3 came out around the same time as the very popular movie, which was based on the first two games and had Scorpion and Sub Zero and Reptile prominently and also the fact that in terms of fandom, Svorp/Sub were basically the Ryu/Ken of the series as they were the more popular poster boys than Liu/Johnny

With MK the die hard fans care a lot about the lore. It dominates every MK message board since the inception of message boards

Contrary to popular belief classic sub zero and ermac finishers are in the game files, the truth is that they were already in development and were removed because they just wanted to sell the game twice like capcom did with SF2

Is that confirmed though because it could just as likely be time or data constraints as MK games always seemed to deal with.

Hell the whole reason pallet swaps were a thing was because it was an easy way to get all the their character ideas without making new costumes makeup etc, if you watch MK2 commercials you can see Reptile was imagined as a lizard back then and that the ninjas all had custom individual masks etc which wouldn't show up in games till MK4 where they stopped using actors\digitized sprites

well its just random costume recording footage. whoever made this didn't know some content was being held back on purpose.
it was pretty ballsy to hold back the ninjas on purpose, and it did hurt the brand for a bit.

still they got mk3 sales from console players and then brought players back to arcade for the update.
a FREE arcade update.

the only people who got screwed those who had to buy both mk3 and umk3 console ports
(back then i rented mk3 and bought umk3 on release after seeing they brought ninjas back in a magazine)
