Every retro gamer could give a solid attempt at recreating 1-1 from memory.

Even the biggest Sonic fan wouldn't be able to recreate Emerald Hill Zone Act 1 from memory.

It's almost as if one is a children's game where the map takes up barely a dozen screens, and the other is a game for adults that's about 6x as long with branching higher and lower paths in multiple areas. This section of the map alone is bigger than the entirety of 1-1.

I'm just going to say it, I never had any kind of mental map of any level in a sonic game, I just keep running to the right until I win

>make your maps so complex that no two play-throughs feel the same
Is John Sega, dare I say it, a genius?

expectation
>you can go whatever way you want!
reality
>okay so I have to go top and get all the rings then backtrack and go mid and get all the rings then backtrack and go bottom and get the rings and then I can touch the save point to open the portal and get the chaos emerald then I can go back up top again and go right

One thing about sonic levels is they repeat a lot. They are built from a small number of 256x256 chunks. You can clearly see the repeated chunks in that image. Building up a level from these chunks is space efficient allowing for massive levels, but it does limit the variety.

I've played "Journey," is that for adults? Way bigger than Sonic 1-1, btw.

Can't compare 8bit bit games to 16bit because they are very simplistic
In comparison, 16bit games like Sonic are detailed and complex offering multiple routes, possibilites and replayability, rewarding exploration.

no fucking way

Yes, but that's because SMB and STH are different platformers with a diferent focus.
Classic Super Mario games' in on making high precision jumps, while Sonic's is on building speed.

Also this.

Weird complaint to make in a thread comparing Sonic to SMB1, which copy pastes entire levels.

Sonic alternative route:
>it's like an entirely different level
Mario alternative route:
>walk on the ceiling to avoid gameplay

Aside from PC and 8 and 16 bit computers most games (nearly all) on consoles were for childern until the PS1 happening. They were pretty much marketed exclusively at kids as well.Nintendo were the last to hop out of the kid friendly marketing and price gouging cartridge cage.

It helps that SMB1 doesn't scroll vertically at all, so you see every single part of the level easily

>>12033321
Sandopolis had a vertical loop, if you didn't clock into that it was a lot harder to find the right path.
