Were videogame related web comics really that big during the early 00's?

web comics were pretty massive prior to youtube and streaming video, they really were some of the only shareable forms of visual media you could drop a quick link to in a message board post or whatever to get your point across
Anonymous No.12036450 [Report]
They spawned enough interest that there were whole conventions around them and the artists of said comics would be huge stars at various conventions, comics posted everywhere and sometimes officially included with some games. I guess PAX is still running, but otherwise everyone got tired of "Epic gamer webcomics" and most web comics in general, aside from occasional butt hurt over stonetoss.
I really don't think anyone really cares about comic strips any more past that, aside from some /co/ users and those 2 or 3 times recently when Garfield comics got uploaded without the black layer.
Anonymous No.12036503 [Report]
There was a time where every webcomic was about gaming and nerd shit, or was a furry webcomic. Now every webcomic is a political cartoon or a furry webcomic.

Not exactly retro as this was around 2013 or 2014, I remember going to Connecticon and there was a kiosk for Ctrl-Alt-Del, and the guys there were in pokemon trainer cosplay and talking to neighbors. They were giving away copies of Analog and Dpad issue 1, and I snatched one (They were free after all).

I don't read any videogame webcomics anymore, I just cringe when I think back on them now. Especially Bum Tickley.

Dobson's style is very "early webcomic", there was a lot of this anime influenced type stuff going around. Part of why he got a reputation for never improving is he was still doing this stuff in the late 10s. By comparison, at that time the RPG World guy had his own TV show and his art was totally different

early internet humor was a very different beast. You of course had people just shamelessly ripping off Simpsons jokes, but sites like Newgrounds and the ability to host your own comic easily really did create a new frontier of humor. For better and worst it was certainly not boring and really did have an exciting feeling as the new generation were making their voices heard. Even early youtube feels like so long ago.

No, he's just using the wrong medium for that wall of text. It belongs on his livejournal, not in a visual medium like a 4-panel comic.
Hell, even expanding it to more panels and showing more visual examples of what he's text-spewing about would have been an improvement. But no, wall-o-text and 4 pathetically static poses.

Dull, uncreative, and not amusing at all.

I lost track of B-Bit Theater pretty quickly, but I'll always have a soft spot for it because it introduced me to Bangai-O.

Thanksgiving 2001, 8-Bit Theater posted a special strip saying that Bangai-O was the best game ever. I saw that, believed it, and asked my brother to get me Bangai-O for Christmas. He did (used, in a new jewel case), and we played it off and on together until we beat the game a few months later. It's still one of my favorite games.

Why do zoomers think it’s an epic meme to give money to a rapist?

CWC was funny when he was a fat kid screaming in his room about trolls and homos; now he’s a sad horror cow and a sexual predator.

I never really cared for particular comic artists, I just liked random shit I'd see posted here.

It really feels like Penny Arcade is behind and out of touch on a lot of stuff. They either play softball with big corpo now or wait till it's safe to take a stab at something.

Only VG Cats.
I don't know who the fuck was reading Penny Arcade and CAD. They were never funny.

I know this isn't /co/ but jesus christ how horrifying, almost everything terrible about CN in the last 15 years compressed into one couple

I remember one day I found a sprite webcoming themed around Smash Bros, and then never found it again. Anyone know what the fuck that was?
I also vaguely remember a webcomic about Samus and Megaman living together in an apartment. This may have been the same comic.

they were relevant in the 2000s, just started losing relevancy once they obviously aged out and had families.

There was something really magical about stumbling onto a random website, and reading every entry in some literally who kids' webcomic over the course of an afternoon.
that side of the internet is dead, these days.

Started around same time as that anon, I dunno. I don't spend all day here anymore cuz it's not worth it, but it's funny sometimes at least. There's nowhere else like it so I never leave forever. I also owe /v/ and /vr/ for helping me find a shitton of great games.

specifically because stumbling onto a random website is dead. Only sad fools chasing a dead era make their own random shitsites and put them out on neocities or something.

i used to spend half my free time reading shitty sprite comics in the 2000s, anyone remember bob & george or sonic & pals?

Yeah! Also all the ones on fireball20xl. I remember being mindblown in high school because one of the girls in the grade ahead of me was a contributor on that site. There was also some sprite comic I remember reading a bunch of in like 2003 that was probably started a year or two prior, I wish I could remember it. It's surely gone and it only exists in that "I'd know if it I saw it" space in my brain so it's rather frustrating.

More people made fun of them than unironically read them. Good webcomics were pretty scant to begin with
