Square fired the "old school" FF talent in mid-development of FFX. For the sequel all the new people there wanted to make a "young" game that panders to a "cool and trendy teen J-pop" crowd. So any character that was NOT a teen got sent to the sidelines to play NPCs.

And we got the game with the storyline of "old people are supid and evil and have poop on them, and only teens should be in charge of the world." It really is cringe-inducing with how terrible that story is. Most people only played it to see if they could get Tidus back, so they tuned out how shitty the overall story was.
