Are there any JRPGs that provide the difficulty, gameplay density and depth that arcade games provide? I'm willing to give them a chance with an open mind, but if a game is mindless or you can just grind with zero consequence then I drop it

Nah, you definitely shouldn't play JRPGs

The two hardest JRPGs I've played are Shinsenden and Deep Dungeon III, both on Famicom. They both require a lot of grinding and are still challenging even after all the grinding.

The only person "grinding" is you, it's wholly on you if you choose to do it.

>challenging
How about this: play one entirely not in English and without help :)

That's the main thing so many RPG players don't get. They use all sorts of guides and tips and then complain things are too easy.

In video games there are two kinds of difficulty: pure execution, and the "figuring out what to do" part. Obviously most RPGs don't have difficulty execution, so the later is all that remains, which becomes moot with guides. I sort of blame US RPG releases in the 8-16 bit which tended to come out with strategy guides included within the game box because they underestimated the audiance, establishing bad habits.

The fact that it's on a console automatically means that you're not getting arcade-level gameplay.

Funny, because I drop a game if it relies purely on reflex or strategy and doesn't let you grind. Grinding invokes power fantasy and training montages. It's why JRPGs are often associated with shonen manga.

Try some challenging ones, such as Romancing Saga 2 (or Saga series in general) or Dragon Quarter.
