The first games I really enjoyed were Gleylancer, Sonic Wings Special and Raiden Trad. I still haven't beaten Raiden Trad. Like >>12055631 said, Elemental Master is also really cool and fairly easy. Twinkle Tale is another good, easy one if you prefer cuteshit over spaceshit, but it's not a traditional forced scrolling shmup and is more of a run and gun. It's fun though.

Novice mode for Crimzon Clover or Mushihimesama. Maybe easy mode touhou. Deathsmiles is also pretty easy too and a good way to learn about scoring and extend mechanics in shmups.

Speaking of Touhou, has anyone played the newest danmaku festival? It was pretty fun. I havent really played much touhou since I got more into cave shmups, but i was surprised how easy it felt compared to when I played touhou a long time ago.

Bro, what the hell? It can't get easier than that. Anything I listed can be cleared within 4 hours of attempts or less if you already have experience with the genre. None of this is supposed to sound "impressive". It's just shit to fill your 1cc collection with easy clears.

What's the point of that?
Anonymous No.12056160 [Report] >>12056162

OP asked how to get into the genre, so I listed a few entry-level games that aren't frustration inducing to the point you just game over non-stop. Now if you already play shmups for years, nothing stops you from giving those games a try. It's just that they aren't that interesting difficulty wise (not counting second loops or scoring route) if you are already good enough to clear Mushi Maniac/Ultra, DOJWL, Garegga, Ketsui, SDOJ, Batrider Advanced, 2hu Lunatic, Tatsujin Oh...

I'm not asking about what's the point of playing an easier shmup by itself, I meant why trying to "fill a 1cc collection" and especially specifically with easier games.

It's just an old /shmupg/ meme. Some anon used to get really mad at people 1ccing shmups and moving to the next game without exploring the mechanics and scoring aspects. IIRC it was something about this thread

Less because of the scoring and more because trying to 1cc many easy games feels like a chore compared to learning progressively harder games.

I started by playing DOJ as my first shmup and even though I haven't played other games in the genre yet, it feels like a game I could play for my entire life without running out of things to do.
Find a game with visuals, sound, or a general look/gameplay loop that appeals to you. You won't know shit about what you'll like before you try it. I knew I wanted to have a ton of bullets on the screen, so I went with a bullet hell that looked good to me. If you find whatever you chose boring, play something else.

>bomb this secret spot to get a bajillion extra points
Not really a real issue. Magazines and word of mouth were a thing back then and you could watch other players find these spots in the real arcade. Now is it a bad game design? No. The game encourages you to bomb A LOT and it's even good for survival runs, since destroying certain spots cause enemies not to spawn (stage 4 and 6).
>Also half the characters are locked behind the Konami code
I honestly consider it a bad game design for the original arcade release, but it was solved a long time ago with emulation/save state and Zakk's patch and most recently with the 2016 port qol features. Not sure how it works in the Saturn version tho.

I'm on the third day of my attempt to finish 1942 (Capcom Arcade Version). I made it into the top 20 in the rankings and managed to get halfway through the game.
But it's more of an endurance test. Not only is the game long, but it's also a bit repetitive, and you have to stay focused for an entire hour, doing pretty much the same thing over and over again.
The game isn't bad, I like how the enemies put pressure on you and reduce your space, but holy shit, the game is archaic overall. I don't know if I'll have the willpower to finish it.

It really changed my view of the game. I like to start these blind and then after a while look up what other people are doing in their clears and it changed the way I feel about a run if I don't kill that many birbs and have to wait a bit for the extend.

Well, today I did my first run and I somehow made it to 2-6 Boss. Man... I can't believe I have the chance to be the first player outside japan to get a Garegga 2-ALL. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IFWKFLKIfu5FlAkbaWEAkSQMptWItFNx/view

FUCK! I'm addicted to this shit. I even dropped my daily gacha habits after starting doing No Miss runs. It feels amazing to be able to consistently clear this game. This game will be 30yo next year and only a few weeks ago I started doing No Miss runs and for some reason nobody outside japan ever did No Miss until now. For a game this popular, you would expect at least one No Miss run from the western shmup community after all these years. Yeah I know, the route to keep the rank low can be a little boring for some people, but that's what makes it so interesting for me. And now I'm on my way to do the same with Extended Mode. This one won't be easy, but it will be more fun than trying to NMNB with the trash ships that don't have piercing shot (silver sword, flying baron, chitta and bornnam).

That's why you keep the powerup meter on shield as much as you can, but you also can get a green after dying to give yourself a lot more time to recover.
One more thing I remember doing in this specific game is hanging out on the right side of the screen because you can seal enemies close enough to your ship.

I like it since it helps you see the game on one credit easily and then you can transition to being good enough to use the bombs properly. No. See the problem here is a fundamental misunderstanding of the Japanese shmup. In a Japanese shmup 1 hit means death. You can have things like shields of various form or power down mechanics but once you have autobomb you are essentially adding lives or introducing a health bar, making it more like a euroshmup.

The only difference is that each hit costs you a bomb, but it's extra lives nonetheless, because not every time you get hit are you going to be able to block with a bomb. The penalty for getting hit is not enough.

Done watching Garegga and collecting data for 6 hours straight. It turns out there is no easy way to clear it. You simply have to be THAT good. And as I expected, this is 10x harder than doing NMNB. At least I found a few interesting strategies and safe methods that can be useful for me like avoiding the carriers in Stage 2-5 and only destroy the small turrets around it, but that also means I can't have homing formation for the boss rush and BH1. Avoiding destroying Slayer's core isn't a bad strategy, but it's a little time consuming. Also, my starting rank theory was right about how it doesn't matter if you die five times in a row on stage 2-1 or 2-2, the rank will always be 43.2%, but never lower than that. So there's no much reason to stockpile resources on the first loop, unless I figure out a way to use my extra lives to reset the rank at the start of stage 2-3.

No Options (risky)
and the data format is like this
Lives | Bombs | Options(+Homing/Search) | Current Firerate
This info helps me to lot in understanding the resource management for early stages. Stockpiling extra lives is a big no, unlike in Normal Mode/first loop. That's guaranteed rank above 90% against BH2 and Glow Squid. 0~2 Lives is the way to go until you reach stage 2-6. And it's good to know that even if you have zero lives and zero bombs, you still have a chance.

How are you supposed to play these games that isn't autism?
Here's what I do:
1. try to get as far as I can on a single credit. I like dodging stuff, and the dynamic nature, but there's no consistency. Sometimes I made it to stage X without any lives, sometimes I waste all of them on stage 1?

Here's what I will never do:
1. watch other 1CC replays
2. save states and practice every encounter

What's the next step?

The next step is to reconsider your approach. Just brute-forcing runs repeatedly take you longer compared to practicing isolated sections to learn from them and gain consistency. Of course, watching replays is NOT necessary, it's ok if you don't want to. Still, practicing is really important, and by just replaying stages that give you trouble directly, skipping the ones you already know, saves you A LOT of time
What matters at the end of the day is that you finally achieve your goal with your own hands, and that you're satisfied with it

I don't think this is possible to happen, unless you forgot to manually change the rom set region to Japan. The default one is always USA (at least for mame, fightcade/FBneo fixed it afak), which doesn't have extra lives enabled. Bullet hell is not easy usually, but easier than it looks due to smaller hitboxes(REALLY small at times, like 1 pixel for both the player and the bullets regardless of how the sprite looks like), typically features slower bullets arranged in predicable patterns, and the player has a lot of resources. A lot of the skill in these games is about learning where to look, other than the more typical shmup techniques.

>extremely easy compared to arcade games and they don't encourage you to improve your skills
>little to no scoring mechanics
>mouse controls
>health bars
>shields
>screen shaking effects
>western developer
>story/cutscenes between stages
>big hitboxes (especially the player's ship)
>linear shot
>slow speed
>upgrades between stages (not to be confused with shop system like the one you find in Fantasy Zone and Trouble Witches)

Just liking them isn't really the best factor to recommend them as a entry-level shmup for new players.

I have tons of hours in cave and raizing shmups, but I still have one "guilty pleasure" in my top 10 shmups. X2 No Relief. Very obscure ps1 euroshmup. Of course, nostalgia plays a big role in this moment, but god lord the music is just amazing and the stage backgrounds and the enemy sprites are gorgeous to this day. Pretty much all stages have different enemies. It's really insane how many enemies their made for this game. The game also gives you a retarded amount of power ups that fills the screen.

BUT would I recommend it to a new player? Never. Anything in this list >>12055967 will teach you better shmup habits and fundamentals if you are new to the genre. Dodging skill? Bomb/Resource management? Pattern memorization? Challenging, but fair difficulty? It's all there.

1cc is the most soulful way to play arcade games imo
I played a bit in arcades as a kid in the late 90s just before they died, and 1cc is just the natural way of playing without wasting a lot of money: You play 1 credit and see how far you can go before you die, then either play a different game or try the same game again another day
The small place I went to didn't have shmups but I did this a lot with Metal Slug X (or was that 2, don't know the difference between these versions desu)

I don't think new players should think about score, that's for people who love shmups so much and they ran out of good shmups to play so they start playing for score

Does rank management really make much of a difference when trying to clear Darius Gaiden? Other than skipping the occasional shot power up and not laying on the autofire, there doesn't seem to be a lot the player can do to control its rate of increase.

I assumed dying would help, but watching the plots in the M2 port shows losing a life gives you maybe 10 seconds of reprieve before it ramps back higher than it was before. Kind of a shame because I'd think it'd be neat to have to plan where to take deaths for each route based on where you could get your shot level back up, trading lives for lower rank and a new stock of bombs.

Note:
And I'm still learning. The micro switches that Sanwa uses, from Omron, are notorious for double-clicking issues in other devices where they are used as well:

>Yes — there are quite a few reports on the Internet of Omron microswitches (especially those used in mice) having problems with “double clicking” (i.e. single presses being registered as two clicks), or related failures like click-drag release, etc. How widespread or severe the issue is depends on factors like model, usage, manufacturing origin, etc. Below is what I found summarizing what people say, what likely causes are, and how big of a concern it seems to be.

TIP for anyone having problems with double input on the micro switches of their Sanwa joysticks:
>open the joystick
>open the cap of the faulty micro switch (note that up-down and left-right are reversed)
>connect the open controller to your computer (being careful not to fuck everything up)
>test it.

In my case, without the cap that keeps the micro switch closed, everything worked perfectly. I assumed that when that micro switch was closed, something inside wasn't exactly where it should be, so I pressed everything to make sure they were properly fitted and closed the micro switch with its cap again.
Now everything is working. Let's see how long it lasts...

Having only played shmups for a dozen or two hours total now, and only with a keyboard, my question is: Why would anyone want to use something as terrible as a joystick for playing these games? I'm basically constantly tapping the keys to modulate my speed as well as properly misdirect bullets by nudging slightly in one direction. Anything that isn't just made of buttons is completely ridiculous for this task. It just isn't efficient at all. It's unergonomic and ergo more tiring, less precise, more prone to causing injury, and all-around worse in literally every single way possible.

Joysticks are more enjoyable to play with when you're performing command sequences, such as moves in fighting games. But these movements aren't exclusive to fighting games.
Tetris Grandmaster (2 forward) is one of the best examples I can think of. There's something in that game that guys call a Zangi Move, which is moving a piece at one end of the screen, below another piece, and locking it in place quickly. With an arcade stick, you don't think while doing this, you just do the "Zangi Move" and the piece ends up in the right place everytime.
In shoot 'em ups, things like that happen sometimes.
So, when you're playing by making predetermined movements instead of just digitally adjusting your position, arcade sticks are simply more enjoyable.

A keyboard only requires very small movements with small muscle groups to play. If you find keyboard tiring, you need to improve your posture or your keyboard's ergonomics. Sit upright in your chair, get an adjustable-height desk and ensure 90-degree arm position, and get a keyboard with very light actuation. There is no way that moving your fingers up and down a few millimeters at most can be as tiring as joystick movements. That just is not possible.
>>12076086
This sounds like an actual skill issue. I also don't think about any motions I need to do while playing a game once I'm used to it. It's called practice. I've used keyboard for movement in games for decades. FPS games, MMOs with keyboard-based movement, RPG Maker games, and basically any emulated 2D console game will give most avid gamers thousands of hours of using this exact control scheme (moving a character around in space with keyboard controls such as WASD or arrow keys). It might take a slight bit more time (a few hours maybe?) to get used to than a joystick, but I passed that point so far back in my childhood that I can't remember what it was even like not to be comfortable with those controls.

On the keyboard, you do exactly the same thing. Look at the "Zangi Move" gif. You don't need to think about what you're going to do, you just put the piece in the right place and press up+left+down (in the case of the example). The point is that most people will find it more enjoyable to make this movement on a joystick than by quickly pressing up+left+down with their fingers.
Arcade sticks introduce this fun factor into some games that would be more about technique if played on a keyboard. It's kind of like racing wheels making simulators much more fun and visceral, but to a lesser degree, and with the difference that the fight stick is generally WORSE in terms of performance than a keyboard or hit box (whereas a racing wheel is much better for driving cars in simulators than the other alternatives).

Vasara Collection is good, I recommend it. The collection includes two games from the series, and even has a shitty, horrible 3D version as a bonus that you can completely ignore, lol.
I recommend starting with Vasara 1, and realizing that you can use melee attacks to destroy projectiles and enemies. In fact, you'll be using melee attacks pretty much all the time, more than normal shooting.

Shmups tend to be quite difficult, but that can be said for most arcade games.
I think the difference is that most other genres, when they go from arcades to consoles/PCs, become easier, but shmups tend to remain just as difficult.
I don't know the cause of this phenomenon. I think shmups become bland if they're too easy, so the developers have no choice. A game like Super Mario, for example, can be super easy, and yet it's still fun to play, like a toy or something. But if a shmup is as easy as Super Mario, no one will find it fun.
Anyway, there are a lot of shoot 'em ups that are quite entertaining because of the challenge. I only played EDF on that Switch service many years ago, it's not bad, but as far as I remember, it didn't really grab me. I think there are a lot of more interesting things to play.

And one thing I forgot, but I personally play shoot 'em ups like I play Tetris. That is, in small sections, but always coming back to them.
I think this is the normal logic of these games. If you just pick up a game and play it nonstop, you'll get tired of it, but if you get into the habit of always coming back to the same games and trying to improve your skills and scores, as you do in Tetris-style games, they end up becoming a very addictive habit, even if you're not a video game god.

Battle Garegga and Daioujou are harder, honestly. I often play them on fightcade in hopes of finding someone semi-competent at dodging bullets, but most of the time I just end up playing with credit feeders.

>Garegga
Difficulty automatically changes to Harder mode in 2 Players mode and it requires a really polished route and resource management, since both players need to control the rank.

>Daioujou
A lot of patterns have different behavior in 2 Players mode and it's almost impossible to get the first extend through scoring. The only way to get the extends is letting players take turns between stage 1 and 2 to full chain through them. Also, players can't pick the same element doll, so no double EXY for the best damage output.

The ones that I find easier based on my coop experience:
>DDP
Easy to get the first extend and you can spam bomb for the win
>Guwange
No scoring required, bomb carriers drop two bombs and there's A LOT of extends through the game
>Giga Wing and Vasara

Zanac for the NES is good but it's quite difficult. Amazing game for the NES, it feels like a 16bit game almost. Pretty good game but the biggest issue I have is how centered it is around it's rank system. Really ahead of it's time but the balance of the game changes so much depending on what weapon you have it's like it becomes a different game.

Personally I prefer weapon 4. The shield is awful and useless because you are just endlessly swarmed by enemies. The base secondary weapon is also useless. Your main weapon powers up too slowly too. It has Gradius syndrome and the extremely blatant rank system should have been a little more forgiving when you die. Despite all this, it's still very good and one the best shmups on the NES easily. I just wish they released the Aleste games on things other than now obscure consoles and Japanese computers. A SNES collection cartridge would have been amazing. At least re-release the collection on steam or something with box art and paraphernalia galleries built in and none of this Japanese Egg service bullshit.
