I will never understand how they claimed they wanted to go back to a more gritty atmosphere of previous games after MK3, but you have all this silly shit with animations during throws, over the top voice samples and just laughably bad movies in MK4. I guess they've managed to do that with how the arenas looked, but everything else just isn't there tone wise.

The silly shit of MK4 was unintentional, silly as it is. The game removed Friendships, and intentionally funny fatalities. MK3 had a lot of fun because the creators and fans were on the same page, understanding the tongue in cheek nature, but it still to some could seem like the series was getting too over the top compared to the original game

It was cheesy like 1 - 3, but lacked any of the intentional silliness that made it famous. It also seemed like it drew aesthetic inspiration from the syndicated cheesy fantasy and scifi tv shows of the time. Like some low budget fantasy series you'd find on the air at 2 PM on a Saturday when all of the other local channels were airing movies and infomercials.

It's not but by 1997 most people had moved on from MK. You already had an epic "end" with Ultimate and MK Trilogy were it felt everyone got one last hoorah and the characters you loved.
Now it was a new storyline that's not as interesting, old characters returning with no real reason to and new characters you don't care for. Why play this when fighting games in general are dead. The competition that does exist is either innovating with 3D fighting (tekken) or crazy combo sprite work (MvC) so even if you were into fighting games why would you play this instead?
Only those autistic enough about the lore like me and didn' tmind the MK gameplay stuck with it.

You have to remember that the spine rip was still a bit taboo/over the top, and it looks like a jpeg head over an ms paint skeleton. I bet they thought being beaten with your own leg was horrifying.

It's not technically a bad looking game for early 3D, I'd say it's about on par with Tekken 3 in terms of graphics, it just looks goofy because the overly animated bouncy style only translates in 2d

The AI doesn't use special moves in the Dreamcast MK Gold either and I guess it's the reason why he's so easy to beat. He loves throwing those severed heads at you though. I've played PC and PS1 back in the day, so my memory's hazy, but I highly doubt the AI is using special moves of other characters in those versions either.

Unfair comparison though. Namco spent huge budget on making it on a ps1-like hardware and in the end it was ported almost 1 to 1.
MK4 was on a very different hardware from PS1 and N64 and the ports were an afterthought outsourced to a British studio and made on tight budget. MK4 on arcade has significally higher polygon count and texture quality than any of the ports.

True, not sure what anon is talking about, but the point still stands, Tekken has fluid more realistic animation, which means extra frames and slower startups, and something like Street Fighter has more dynamic flowing moves, often times very few frames and more functionality minded. Mortal Kombat is an interesting case because they are animating real photos of actors, so you get this sort of clunky brawling feel.

I like MK4 for what it is, but it has too much against it to make it as beloved as the first three even if the original game is the worst gameplay wise, too many new flop characters, gimmicks that felt awkward etc

Now, MK9 is good dude... it's not retro, but in a way it has more in common with the first three games than four because it's a 2D fighter, no 3D movement, which is what old school fans want, and I would say X-Ray moves are on par with weapon modes, but implemented more smoothly, doesn't feel like it's breaking up the Kombat like pulling out a droppable weapon does

It's not outright bad but even at its best it is just an underwhelming side step when compared to MK3.
Most of the new ideas are more miss than hit (characters, weapons, lore, graphics, fatalities) but the core gameplay remains very fun although I still prefer UMK3 and even Trilogy.
