This is game is uncontrollable on original hardware.
The frames skip so badly, the lag is so inconsistent with how bad it is, and all the enemies are always rolling and hopping around erratically. It's unplayable on Perfect Agent.

Agent and Secret Agent give you a ton of health and shields while not requiring the most time-consuming and finicky missions to be completed. It's nothing like 00 Agent in Goldeneye, as you that game runs much better and the enemies aren't all acrobats while you have to aim at 5 fps.

Perfect Agent is unplayable on N64.

Skill issue
Anonymous No.12079336 [Report]
that's part of the reason the Perfect Dark speedrunning community is so small compared to Goldeneye. the top runners are forced to use pause buffering in order to aim at enemies and quickly kill them, which makes the videos of the runs nearly unwatchable depending on how much they pause buffer.

OP here, really disappointed in how lacking all of these responses are.
Not even a single argument to refute. You're all just upset I correctly called the game out.

You can't aim or move properly at an unstable 10 FPS with an N64 controller.
You didn't beat the game if you played it on anything but original hardware with a real N64 controller, you beat your own hacked version to give yourself perfect controls and performance.

Strange post...
Obviously they only dodge when you aim at them, but they ALWAYS dodge the MOMENT your crosshair is on them for longer than a frame.
By the time you press Z to react to your crosshair being over an enemy, the game lag and the low fps have already caused your shot to fire AFTER the enemy has moved slightly away just to ruin your initial shot.

Not a problem with a keyboard and mouse......... but of course that's cheating and not playing the real game.

The gameplay is more about memorising enemy placements so that whenever you enter a room you can quickly take them out with headshots. It's not run and gun. If you start taking hits and get caught under pressure, you'll usually die quickly, so you have to avoid those situations completely. If you don't want to memorise, then just be sure know where your cover is at all times and be ready to run back to it if needed.
Anonymous No.12080315 [Report]
>>12080126
If you remove the lens flares and their effects, the performance jumps about 5-8 frames. You can remove some with a Gameshark but then you nust force it into hi-res which ruins the intention of making the game run better.

Like goldeneye most got a few levels in and stopped progressing. Every copy of goldeneye I see in the wild stops at Statue because the game is no longer a shooting gallery where you occasionally throw an item on a terminal.

How come all the posters claiming to have no such problems have yet to offer a single point of advice besides >>12080207 ?

Here are some actual tips from someone who actually beat the game on N64 on PA:
>memorize where to go for the objectives and where troublesome guards will be
>move about slowly and run away whenever multiple enemies start attacking you
>try using "Wide" video mode but without the 16:9 aspect ratio to make the framerate far more stable
>never turn on "Hi-Res"
>use control style 1.2
>experiment playing without lock-on as you'll soon notice that your headshots keep automatically being aimed downwards at the weapons they hold

>cover
Yes, this exactly. It comes down to 99% of people playing FPS games incorrectly.
They prioritize aiming and shooting at enemies as soon as they see them, end up getting engaged by multiple enemies and having a bad time, running out of magazine, etc.

Instead they should be prioritizing cover and utilizing that cover to expose themselves to a minimal number of enemies at a time that they can handle.

So being good at FPS games is really more about movement (utilizing cover and using movement, not aim, to do most of the work of getting your crosshair on or close to the enemy). Then the last remaining bit is the aim and shoot part.

Anonymous No.12083172 [Report]

I agree, the game runs at a outright criminal framerate. Even at the time it was bad.

That being said, it is beatable on the higher difficulties, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. Try the PC port instead. I did it because I had nothing better to do but I probably would've played the PC decomp if it had been an option.

Don't get me wrong, it's a really cool game and at the time it was outstanding. But it did run like ass, much like most rare games on the console. Plus in my experience the slowdown actually helped you a bit since game logic slowed down with slowdown.

Either way, if you feel like playing the original is not that fun, give the PC port a go instead, sure it's not the 1:1 experience but a lot of what made perfect dark painful was because of limitations of the n64 and rares programming ability.

Their platformers have aged much better desu.

Yeah, and to be fair it's something that took me a long time of playing FPS to really get too, so it's not super intuitive right away.

But once you do start playing that way, and getting better with planning movement/cover, it becomes a lot more fun and there's a much cooler flow to the gameplay compared to just standing there and blasting at shit

this is true, i remember me and my friends trying to progress further in the game, i think the furthest we ever got was the train level.
Anonymous No.12085298 [Report]
>>12085269
Train gets pretty hard because it is very cover based. You can only have one enemy that sees you at a time in the first two or so cars and really snipe them out. I did my first 00 Agent run of Goldeneye this year. I did a little bit of a Perfect Agent run in Perfect Dark and got to the airport. They really upped the difficulty between games.

verifying that players cannot aim for shit on PA on original hardware. auto-aim is nearly non-existent except to ruin your shots. the fps is far too erratic and low to hope to headshot any running enemy.

I remember a bunch of slowdown, not a lot of frame-skipping, idk.
But yeah a lot of games ran really badly on old consoles but people didn't really know how to articulate that "wow this game is running at 16 fps and giving me a headache".
The aim-reading at higher difficulties is also kind of annoying.
