Pure fan service. The 32X was barely sold in Japan. Only like half the titles (so, about 15 games) were even released there, with only one Japanese exclusive.

Remember, Virtua Fighter was a phenomenon in Japan. People bought Saturns in 1994 just to play Virtua Fighter, and the later Super 32X port is often regarded as an even better port of the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of 32X's were scooped up from clear-out bargain bins by people who went from Mega Drive to PS1 just to get access to Virtua Fighter. In the US I think 32X's eventually started going for $30 or something.

>This setup would have absolutely blown my mind as a kid.

The movie is from 1984, two years after the release of Pac-Man for the 2600. Jackie Chan is suppose to be a Japanese race car co-pilot who is testing out some wacky 'high tech' Japanese race car in a Cannonball Run race. He played the same character in the first Cannonball Run as well. The sequel is pretty cheesy and not as good as the first. But a dumb-fun Burt Reynolds movie.

How come they only ever showed him playing E-rated games other than Halo with the bros in the final season? It would've been so natural to cut from a scene of someone getting beaten up in-universe to a brutality in Mortal Kombat Trilogy, an in-universe gunfight to GoldenEye, etc.

Hell, since we're on the subject, how did they get factory-sealed original GBAs for those kids to unbox on-camera in 2004, and why did they even bother doing so? Did someone have old stock they were selling for cheap?

I think some parents will only buy non-mature games for their children, I know that my father did mostly the same. I did play Half-Life and Halo however. I also didn't have that much of a strong interest in some mature games (RE/SH or MGS) because they seemed so difficult and less fun at that age. Would a 10-year-old rather watch Spongebob or The Wire?

I thought that GBA scene was also weird because GBA SP was already out.

It's my absolutely favorite animu and I would recommend it to absolutely no one but the most pop-culture-addicted late30s-early 40s out there since almost every moment has some sort of reference or parody in it.
And even IF you think that you're well versed in that stuff you'll probably only pick up like 60-70% of them.
It's somewhere between a 90s Nicktoon, a giant shitpost, a meta-commentary about consumerism and entertainment and the attempt by the staff to cap off the legacy of an anime slot that went for 40 years with a giant bang.
Not a single fuck was given and it felt like as if the whole thing was mostly made for the staff and them alone and sometimes you'll wonder just how the hell some of the stuff in it made it onto air. (in fact, almost the entire final episode was a giant "fuck you" towards boring, sanitized (kids) entertainment without any edge)
And the worst/best of all: in the end, almost all of that shit in it makes sense in context.

In 1982? Are you kidding me? That movie came out in the same summer as Tron, a movie that is literally about a video game.
I don't know the genuine "first instance," but off the top of my head I remember the "Computer Space" arcade cabinet in Onions Green (1973), for example. I suspect we might even be able to push into the late 60s depending on what your definition of a "video" game is.

Tony didn't want him using the PS2 to watch porno DVD's since it supported DVD playback out of the box, unlike the Xbox which requires a DVD remote peripheral or softmodding to play DVD's.

Believe it or not, I have this normalfag buddy, and this one time the subject of old games we played when we were younger came up, and he literally, unironically started telling about how he saved up money to buy a GameCast. I laughed, thinking he was referencing the movie, then asked him if he meant a GameCube or Dreamcast, and he actually looked confused. Then I asked if he watched Malibu's Most Wanted, and he said yes. I then reminded him of the scene, and he exploded in laughter and said he couldn't believe he actually made the same fucking error. >I thought it flopped over there
It sold 4.5 millions, I wouldn't say it flopped, more like mediocre or disappointing sales, take into account that the master system only sold 1 million in Japan.
It was destroyed by the 17 millions of the super Famicom, but it again did better than the master system because the Famicom sold 20 millions.
>Surprising the mega drive appeared in some jap media
To be fair it appears now in japanese media, but if you look at japanese media of the time they always use a famicom

The N64 sold only a million more than that and I still get tendies on this board trying to convince me it wasn't a failure in Japan. So I'll agree to admit the N64 didn't fail if they admit the Mega Duraibo didn't fail either

4 million is still a lot of people owning it and it was a heavily arcade focused console so it was well liked for its specific niche. I can see a lot of the otaku types who write this stuff wanting to slip it in
>>12087963
>So I'll agree to admit the N64 didn't fail
It did fail. Their previous console was the champ at 17mil sales, going from that to the N64 is falling off bad. You can bet at Nintendo Japan HQ they weren't all saying, wow, we did okay, good job.
>if they admit the Mega Duraibo didn't fail either
Better than the Master System but while the Genesis was neck in neck with the SNES in America and Europe, the SFC left it in the dust. Sega of Japan was apparently ruthlessly mocked internally by the higher ups for it.

Whether it is the N64 or Mega Drives Japanese sales performance there is no point in polishing a turd. Saying mediocre or failed, the result is the same.

Thanks why I mentioned the master system, if you sell 1 million in a generation and in the next generation you sell 4,5 millions it's a considerable growth even if you're still behind the competition. But going from 17 millions to 5,5 millions it's a heavy loss

I really don't get why Genesis didn't do well in Japan, everywhere else in the world it was just as popular and beloved as the SNES.

Believe me there's a really big difference, but when it comes to discussing videogames people always go to extremes, a console is either a big success or a big failure. In reality the most important thing is how rentable is a product, for example the genesis outsold the Snes in north America yet because Sega of America made bad financial decisions, Nintendo probably made more profit than Sega in north America with less sales

I guess through the law of equivalent exchange, the PC Engine thus underperformed in Europe and America, and then Genesis scored big there instead?

It's gotta be considering the way the disc looks and the jewel case it's in. Just a quick google search yields a pretty close resemblance to the blank discs Kodak was selling. I'm not super well versed on anime, I'm definitely more of a video game guy, but is this clip from Evangelion? If so does anyone have any other instances of this character's handwriting? If the artists cared enough to make them match then I'd say that this is 100% a burned game. Pretty crazy to see honestly, just goes to show how prevalent the piracy scene was for these older disc based systems.
