Are the Wizardry games worth playing in current year? If so what is the best way to play them?

If you really like masochistic dungeon crawlers where you can randomly be teleported into a wall by a chest trap and have your party deleted, go ahead.

There was a remake of Wizardry 1 recently with some extra content that you can play to gauge whether you'd like the series. I think they may have even backported some of the features from later games like being able to have some types of weapons for some classes to attack from the back row (party slots 4-6)

If pic related, if you really REALLY have to, absolutely go for it, although be prepared for experience that even for 80's PCs standards would be quite unwelcoming and tiresome.
Not retro but better "wizardry-like" experience for today players are Etrian Odyssey games on NDS for example if you have one or can emulate.

I think it holds up pretty damn good as long as you go into it understanding that it's a very difficult game that is attempting to capture the atmosphere of old school, hardcore tabletop campaigns, where one bad roll is game over. it succeeds at that in a way few games do, and it has a nice ambient vibe to it. but it's fucking hard.

Yeah I beat 1, it's a breezy 10-15 hour long game without too much commitment.
It's very much a knowledge-check game with most the challenge evaporating once you're in the know, but it's nice when you manage to get a veteran party going.

I played Wizardry 1 (NES version) as a kid in the early 90s for way more than 15 hours and got nowhere near the end. I didn't have the benefit of an adult brain or GameFAQs, though, which explains my failure.

Decades later, I watched the Wizardry OVA. It was ok.

the 6-7-8 trilogy makes me feel so melancholic man, what could've been. The story, the art, the voice acting, it's like walking right into a 1970s fantasy/sci fi novel.

I recommend:
Playing the 1+2+ 3 on snes (rebalanced mod) absolutely ‹3 masterpiece.
Playing the 4 on ps1 (jap but you can put it in eng in option)
The 5 on snes (english retranslation less censored)
The 6 on snes but the recently eng patch on saturn il a good choice too...
The 7 on ps1 (eng translation) i can't wait for the saturn translation :p

can't seem to patch that properly for some reason, Snex9x gives me red lines and bad checksum. I patched it with only the Aeon Genesis translation and the same thing happens. However, with the other translation, no issues. Any advice? It's definitely the right rom...maybe my IPS patching program?

There is a fan-made 577-page document that translates all the text in the game. You're supposed to have it open while playing. Not ideal, but miles better than no translation at all.

Japanese Wizardry games are like Fallout 3/NV/4. They are just using the brand and aren't really part of the series.
Anonymous No.12086487 [Report]
Tried the DOS port. It's fun, but a mix of unforgiving difficulty and the lack of a manual saving feature filters me hard. Is there a port that doesn't automatically save the game on exit? IIRC SNES Wizardry 5 only saves in town and on the graveyard screen, so you have room for a mistake or bad RNG. Would be a life saver here.

Lots of old games used text from the manual as copy protection or even to save disk space actually.

So I tried 5&6 on the snes, as well as a pirated copy of ordeals. I didn't get very far because something about the enemy placement in the combat screen just seemed off. Like their sprites were never fully shown or off center or something. Is that intentional or am I nuts?

Wise posting. And even then there are infuriating parts because of the whole Wizardry bullshit gameplay in all games: insta kill enemies (ninja?) and enemies who permanently drain your levels.

for Wizardry 4, play this one. It has 4, an arranged version of 4 based on the PC Engine version, and 5 all in their entirety
and despite being a JP only release you can still set 4 and 5 to full English, while arranged 4 has limited English options. the SNES port of 5 is also a good choice.

If you're going to bother with Wizardry you should start with the first five on Apple II in order, because you import your characters into each new game from the last. It's the original platform, as well. Other platforms have differences here and there.

It's hard enough starting from scratch in the first game, doing it for each successive game is just retarded. You literally need thousands of HP and etc. going into the second game or else you could easily die on the first level, it's literally a harder continuation of the first game. And so on all the way up until V for which the Apple II was still the premier platform. Only with 6 did they revamp everything and renew and modernize the game.

It's the opposite for 6-7-8, there it's really better to start fresh each game.

If Wizardry is too hard for you maybe start with famicom megaten, Ultima, or Gold Box D&D.

Those 3 have some of the same hardcore mechanics like monsters that steal your levels, but they aren't so big on punishing you for not knowing everything. Gold Box D&D in particular actually has even more confusing/dense mechanics than Wizardry, but it's also considerably better balanced and less sadistic to the player.
