Was calling hotlines for game tips also a thing on the 2000s onwards, or it was strictly a 20th Century thing.

Less-so for tiplines, and moreso for easter eggs. God of War had two different phone numbers to call depending on what you did

I'm pretty sure it calling for tips started dying in the 16 bit era when games were finally being made for non autistic beings

Died with GameFAQs for online families.
Just like how chat rooms killed phone sexlines.

I remember the last time I called the NP hotline was around 1999 to ask for help on Zelda II finding the last heart container (I got into /vr/ early). They were actually very helpful...then we got internet a few months later and I never called again after that.

Obviously GameFAQs and the like are more convenient but calling the hotline was SOVLFUL. I've read interviews with people who worked on the NP hotline and I guess in the early days before they had a computer database, you had to maintain your own binder of tips and maps. SOVL levels out of control. I'd give anything to have been there.

I called it once in 93 for help with super ghouls n ghosts. I thought the "you gotta finish the game twice" was just a schoolyard troll. But the guy answering was rude.

I think it was a thing briefly for those with no/poor internet, but essentially died when more people could just search up "[game] walkthrough" or buy the strategy guide right there in the store.

It was right when the game came out, they actually had an automated message about it. I guess they were getting a lot of calls.

You are a fucking poorfag for not being able to afford internet to read Sonic guides back in 1994

There were no sonic guides back then, especially on launch day. Was I supposed to google them you dumb zoomer?
