No they didn't. They were a cheap solution to saving disc-based games. Plus before everything was internet, you could share and transfer saves with other people.

The ability to take your game AND save(all in the game case) to a friends house and get back right where you left off on their system I honestly wish I saw again.

OG Xbox with its hard drive already made memory cards redundant and still optionally used them to transfer saves between consoles. Later consoles allowed automatic data transfer over network, making memory cards completely unnecessary.

My favorite aspect about PS1/2 memory cards is that your game data isn't bound to the console or the game itself, and so you can easily sell hardware and software without having to worry about data loss

These things are better than the alternative, i.e.on-board memory which would have ruined pretty much every retro console by now.
I wish they were more compatible with other devices, though, like PSP's Memory Stick is.

yeah it's expensive (~$60) but I think it's worth it just to be able to move a save between PS1/2 to PS3 consoles alone.
I haven't used it to move to PC (I use my PS3 and copy to PSP for that) but I think it needs a driver to work correctly

I hit a memcard pro2 recently and I've been slowly copying my memory cards over to it one by one using the ps2. Not the easiest most fun way of doing it but saving my money on a ps3 - usb adapter thingy makes it worth it for me. Plus the memcard does a lot more
Anonymous No.12092398 [Report] >>12092421
>>12092339
You're as bad as OP. Acade games are only shallow slop? The absolute beauty of 3rd and 4th gen was that you could have shorter form arcade games AND really long form adventures using saves.

Hell, with memory cards, an arcade style game could save score, have lots of stages, and have unlockables.

Neo Geo used memory cards. The PC Engine also used external storage; the Backup Booster was one such option, and the Ten no Koe Bank HuCard was basically a memory card for the CD add-on. Even the Famicom got in on the act with peripherals such as the Bandai Datach Joint ROM System, and ASCII's TurboFile.

There was a save cartridge for the Sega CD, even though the Sega CD does have some internal storage for saving.

Not on a stock console, no. The USB is for PSP connectivity with certain, mostly Japanese-exclusive, games.
Hacked consoles can export and import saves to/from the USB drive, but the last model patched FMCB in the BIOS and the software exploit on the memcard must be triggered manually every boot.
