I think I got it. The Intact cup is under the machine and reflected up with a mirror. When you shoot the cup the mirror changes and some pre broken pieces are thrown up in the air (probably pushed with compressed air?) and fall back in their compartment.

I too was intrigued by what was happening. It turns out that the cup is quickly obscured by a black cover while simultaneously throwing up broken pieces into the air.
