Demon's Crest
I've never heard much about Demon's Crest other than its good and at least kind of a Metroidvania. I was wondering since it's kind of like a Metroidvania are there specific items that help more than others like in Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Or should I stop thinking about it like a regular Metroidvania.

Just play the fucking game first retard
Anonymous No.12093140 [Report]
It doesn't have lot's of items like Castlevania games. Just play the game.

You pretty much need to collect everything to even beat the game, so don't worry about it. For being kind of seemingly linear levels, the secrets are pretty well hidden, especially the entrances to new areas. It's very similar to a gothic Mega Man X, but with some stages inside others, and a RPG mode 7 overworld you fly over to get to areas.

It's an amazing game, and pretty hard to beat 100%. You should absolutely play it and go in dark, but you probably will need some guided help later on.

it's an action platformer with an extra path in every level

Imagine if this had got the Symphony of the Night treatment on Playstation too.

One of the worst parts is the bullshit true ending boss and how you can't just restart with all of your items if you fail and have to farm them again, so use a save state before you get to him

The correct terminology is Willyvania as Jet Set Willy on the ZX Spectrum predates Metroid.

This is a very good game but I think the world has somewhat flawed designed and it needed to spend another month or two in the oven.
Also there's a claim in an old Nintendo Power that the game had NEGATIVE sales in one week (more people returned it than bought it). After playing the game I think I understand why but it's sort of spoiler-y so I'll refrain.

It's because you can mistakenly believe you finished the game in an hour when you actually had to find more secret areas.

Never played it but it looks like a set of linear levels with some secret passages that can be revisited at any time? Or how does this differ from a mega man game?

There are branching paths that lead to different sublevels with different bosses and some of them need you to acquire abilities/forms to access.

Yeah that's most of it. It also has a crude 3D (via Mode 7) overworld with its own small set of quirks and secrets, in place of Mega Man's simple stage selection menu. And unlike Mega Man it gives you a lot of freedom to decide when and how to end the whole story by assaulting the final boss.

Since this thread is up...

Supposedly this game sold really badly. Embarrassingly so. I remember some anon posting how there was a week, month or whatever it was where it literally sold negative copies somehow. Which I guess means some people bought it but then took it back kek. I don't remember the detail but maybe someone here remembers what I am referring to.

That surprises me, how did that even happen?

To clarify; what would drive people to want a refund? Was there some game-breaking bug in some prints?

I'm the anon that always makes the "negative copies sold!" claim. It comes from the game's entry on Nintendo Power's top 100 list. Basically, more people returned the game than bought it but that was only one week. I would assume that NP, given that they were part of Nintendo's marketing arm would know this.
I also believe it also had a very low print run and little marketing (an EGM review of the game states "Capcom isn't hyping this one. Why?"

Anyway I guess you'd ask WHY would so many people return it? Well as >>12093709
states, you can actually finish the game very quickly. You get a "bad" ending but a lot of gamers would assume they had just beaten it. Even a full playthrough of the game is only about 2 hours long and while it's pretty tough, the only super challenging moment is the final boss, especially if you're a GnG vet.
So I think the "negative sales one week" is a combination of factors
>low print run and sales overall
>short game
>possible to "beat" the game very quickly
>also this game came out in late 1994 and there was a murderer's row of games coming out at this time. I could easily see someone beating this, returning it and then picking up DKC or FFIII

It is a shame, the spritework in it is absolutely beautiful and the game itself, despite being short, is always changing up with new forms.
