Yoshis Island
>great and memorable boss fights
>great level variety (more than 50 long levels and none is like the other)
>shit ton of content: transformations, items, minigames, a shit ton of different enemy types etc
>super soulful music
>easy to beat, but hard to 100%
>shit tons of secrets that encourage you to explore, secret areas everywhere
>Nintendo pured their hearts and souls into it
>simply feels like a huge adventure and less like a platformer where you just try to reach finish, platformers rarely achieve this feeling

I don't get what is there not to love about this game. Haters are just jealous they missed out on it or were too insecure to give it a chance because it looks kind of "cute".

It's an amazing game and you definitely should play it if you're into this kind of game. OP is being stupid by trashtalking "haters" so simplistically, and the game is certainly flawed, but it's also very very good in most ways that matter. I don't even like it very much myself and I'm saying this. It's worth trying.

this is debatable. one may argue that it breaks the game flow, but at least the idea itself is certainly original and challenging
>no beautiful, immersive, fun to explore map with secrets and secret passages to unlock and be visible after like in smw but rather a linear bland boring 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 road, barely more visualized than buttons in an elevator
why did they do this? just lazy, rushed development?

>why did they do this? just lazy, rushed development?
The map variety is way too high for a world map. In one level you are in a jungle, then in a lava level, then in the skies or whatever. How do you even make a world map that doesn't look like nonsense? SMW had far less variety.

Were you just not there? The crayon art style greatly divided the market. This is why NoA's executives wanted a more realistic art style; they were seeing the backlash.

>This game is not a hidden gem, its a fucking mainline mario game
And thus its sales should have been astronomical like in previous Mario games, but it didn't for a reason. And no, the lifespan of the SNES doesn't matter; DKC was more well-received and actually managed to sell hardware, finally making the SNES win over the Mega Drive in America. Miyamoto was considered god-like at that point and the idea of executives telling the genius what art style to do was unthinkable. The only reason why they were doing it is because of market data.

Any anticipation for a sequel to Super Mario World died with Yoshi's Island, costing them many of their former consumers. Most people don't even consider it a Mario game.

>with like 3 sequals its about as mainstream as if gets
With most of them being mediocre to bad games that only got created out of developer desire/vanity, not because of it sold well (i.e. it's not what consumers wanted). Games like Yoshi's Story only continued in the saccharine direction Nintendo's developers wanted to take their games.

>I don't get what is there not to love about this game.
People got filtered by 16-bit baby cries. I think the game was also really hurt by being called "MARIO WORLD 2" while not actually having the player control a recognizable Mario.

A big thing people overlook is that the game came out kind of late in the SNES life cycle (the N64 was about a year away at the time) and people were starting to get burnt out on 2D platformers as a genre if they couldn't offer something visually edgy or compelling. 3D was already in people's living rooms, thanks to the PS1.

Also, people were legitimately turned off by baby mario, his crying, and the overall "childish" graphic style. A half-assed, direct sequel to Mario World using the exact same engine probably would have performed better.

>Bro its a beloved nintendo classic, its not underrated or appreciated
You mean it's overrated by Nintendro drones on the internet. Alao nice false equivalence.

Yoshi's Island's art style being seen as controversial is a well known fact to older people who lived during the time. Go ask any of them; they will tell you that many people did not like the art style and were angry at Nintendo's direction with the game. This doesn't dispute that were people who did love the art style, but those who loved the art style were clearly not the majority of consumers.

>>12097910
You can't excuse Yoshi's Island because "the SNES was dying" because the SNES was dying well before Donkey Kong Country. Hell, Donkey Kong Country saved the SNES by providing a massive momentum boost. It pushed the SNES atop the Mega Drive in the 16-bit console war at the time and brought excitement again to the SNES console.

Also, 3D clearly wasn't it given that Super Mario 64 underperformed compared to previous Mario games.

the movement doesnt feel nearly as satisfying as SMW, sonic or (especially) DKC. aiming eggs to shoot constantly wasnt very fun for me either. oh yeah and the WAAAAH WAAAAH WAAAH at incredibly high pitched tone 3x louder than the in game music any time you get touched by anything didnt help.

its still a great game (carried by its graphics and sound) but not in the top tier of 16 bit platformers imo. Id rather play SMW, any game in all stars, dkc 1/2, sonic 1-3 or rocket knight adventures.
