its a tense platformer where any slight mistake could mean death and loss of tons of progress. Thats why the tank controls make sense. The first game is a solitary and atmospheric experience that i wish more games had. Later games just ramp up the gun fights and enemy encounters like crazy, with retarded gimmicks and insanely obtuse puzzles in much later installments. Also atrocious vehicle segments creeping up more and more with every game.
TR1 is quite literally just a 3D equivalent of the OG Prince of Persia without the shit time limit.
You can play the remastered version, those have the option for "modern" controls. But you'll quickly find out how retarded it is to play them with that scheme. You lose a lot of precise movement options, for the sake of smooth stop&go movement. If you come expecting Mario 64, or Asscreed, you are going to have a bad time. What u will get is a methodical platformer that requires the player to observe their environment and constantly calculate distances and gaps using the simple grid metric provided by the game. All while fending off gradually more insane enemies and avoiding traps. Honestly some of the biggest jumpscares i've ever had were from this game.
