To answer you >>12098992 There are some exclusives in Japan that got released, there are some MSX modern Replicas like the MSX OMEGA or I heard in japan like 10 years ago or in Korea made a "NEW" MSX2+ for a limited time and I read online that there are in Brasil some DIY kit to build your own MSX2+.
Anyway I discovered this computer when I was 18 (12 years ago) when I started to discover/rediscover some retrogame and I was looking about Snatcher and on wikipedia says there is the Sega CD version and read there is the MSX and learned that there is Metal gear on it (the OG one) and played it, finished and loved it but then forgotten.
This year I rediscover the MSX emulator and the MSX world and I fell in love hard, started to learn MSX basic, got a lot of old magazines from my public library to learn about it, played some indiegames and msx games, I would love to own a original MSX2+, Maybe i'll build a OMEGA MSX next year but until then I'll keep using fMSX.

MSX was actually pretty popular worldwide and very popular in Japan. It just wasn't popular at all in the US, but it could still sell to the retro gaming and US otaku market. It would sell well in South America too.

They made the Atari VCS which is a decent home mini PC with their own OS and tons of Atari games. I think they should get into the mini PC market, the idea of having a good Atari mini PC is awesome to me.

me too i was interested when I fell in love with the Computer and started to look around and I knew like people make replicas of C64 and informed myself and look around if there are replicas for MSX too and infact there are a lot and even an entire community around. Even the invetor Kazuhiko Nishi still work on it and make conventions on how to use it.

One of the great things about systems that were made with off the shelf parts is that they can often be reproduced years later cheaply and easily without having to resort to using an FPGAY. People have been doing this for a long time so there's a lot of information available about doing it. And now you can even buy kits and pre-built devices. I started off building a Colecovision replica and ended up tweaking it to handle many other systems, including MSX variants.

I brought an msx 2 but it might be a waste since most of the best games are on the Konami MSX collection for Sega Saturn, its mostly just Compile games that I was interested in like Golveleyous and Aleste so in a way I spent a lot of money just to play 5 extra games.

I'll probably get the Atari ST that was announced since ST stuff never comes out, the 400 didn't seem authentic with all the crap on the joystick.

The C64 one is pretty weird because the motherboard is small enough to fit in the joystick, the plastic C64 could be removed and just used as an ornament fairly easily.

The thing about MSX2 is that it had Aleste 2 and Space Manbow. Those are really good shooters that haven't been released anywhere else AFAIK.

I think Microsoft is focused on their current systems than their past Japanese success. They did promise teams dedicated to backwards compatibility.

Both should still be on EGG (Manbow on Wii/U as well), so legalfags can still get them but it's emulation. Then again most re-releases and collections are, so I'm not sure if that's an issue for you.

Manbow does have some ports for JP pre-smartphone era phones, but that's less accessible than just getting an MSX2 and the game.

I'll try to look into it, I used fMSX because it's the one I use on my cellphone and PsP when I play games and I tought it was pretty Faithful (mind that the Originals MSX I tried were only at retro conventions)

Konami did make a lot of the best games on the MSX. The experience and volume of titles they had on the platform pushed them forward to more and better output in the arcades and console sector years later, so those early games are well worth preserving.

The Sega Saturn was my primary system for multiplats at the time, but Konami did not put forth as strong of effort on the system to contemporary competitors. Perhaps, due to licensing issues, they made Playstation their typical lead platform at the time, they released later volumes abandoning a multi-platform strategy. They are older titles not expected for as much returns, so abandoning less profitable platforms may have been in their best interests. I remember there was a FPGA system that played MSX cartridges I was trying to save up for having a shell shaped like a taco, but all I see is the SX-2 now. Maybe try that out to play some of the games from other developers.

For years there's been lots of 1chipMSX-based devices you can buy online, and I'm pretty sure the firmware and schematics are out there so you can DIY it if you have an Altera kit lying around. There's even been some recent developments like the TRHMSX so it's not like FPGA MSX clones are rare by any means.

Hell, if you got some surplus Z80s lying around you could always put together a pretty accurate MSX from scratch with a GR8BIT or Omega kit. And obviously there's MiSTer cores to play around with, but I don't think any of them are mature enough to prefer over tried and true software emulators like OpenMSX unless you're hellbent on using a CRT.

Lots of cool shit from Konami that never even got ported to their half-assed compilation discs, like the Nemesis 3 (completely different from arcade Gradius 3) and King's Valley 2. Even without Metal Gear, I'm sure they'd would be able to compile a fairly solid collection of MSX titles for a mini console, combining their complete non-licensed catalog no King Kong or Phoenix, unfortunately with that of Hudson Soft and then licensing a few more titles from Compile and the like for pennies.

The real barrier I think is how the MSX brand is managed by Kazuhiko Nishi in Japan, who is reportedly a pain to deal with and keeps trying to milk fans through repeated kickstarter scams and flooding the market with half-assed replicas. I doubt he'd bother trying to spend any time or money trying to court Konami, even after they've demonstrated their MSX catalog is pretty cheap to license by putting it up on Project EGG.
