Ninja Gaiden Black is pretty bad

Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode, final underwater level. Your hitbox shifts like crazy including being different if you are moving or staying still, the spacing is very tight, and there are tons of mines that can kill you before you reach the end. The game is already brutally hard and unforgiving, but this section in particular is sadistic. Pretty much all of the underwater sections are that much harder than the other parts of the game with maybe the exception of the first person mazes, but that last one is just unfair.

Every water level in Blood. Blood is the only game that fades your screen to pitch black as you start running out of breath. Such a cheap shitty mechanic.

The Labrynth Zone section of Scrap Brain Zone Act 3. I mean Labrynth Zone was awful but having to go through it again in a white and purple color scheme is...maddening.

I almost can't decide what was worse, Atlantica in KH1, or Atlantica in KH2. The former has among the worst level navigation schemes in a game of its kind and makes battles infuriating, and the latter is barely even a game at all, as it's just a series of shitty rhythm minigame sequences. I'm leaning toward the first, as KH2 Atlantica is actually optional IIRC.

lol, no. Legitimately the best dungeon in the game, and one of the best "water levels" of all time.

Oot water temple is one of the better dungeons
Very satisfying central puzzle
Pretty cool boss
Item is lame but whatever.
The only real issue is the boots thing but its such a nothing burger.
Oh no like 1:30 extra minutes of pausing the game combined

The worst part is that you have to constantly activate and deactivate your oxygen supply if you don't want to use it up in five seconds.
On the other hand, I wonder if retro FPS game consisting exclusively of underwater levels would work if your character could breathe underwater.

All MM dungeons suck. It's like they were added just because "all Zelda games should have dungeons".

Majora's Mask with zero "Zelda" dungeons and twice the Bomber's Notebook quests would be insanely kino

It would probably be kind of boring but not annoying. Kind of like always having Wings of Wrath in Heretic and Hexen.

sure, as long as you disregard realism and don't change the player's momentum physics in the water. there are a few Doom wads that pulled it off fairly well.

Any Mario game, ever. Somehow, they never managed to figure out how to make water levels fun, despite Ecco the Dolphin managing to make an entire game the water level, and being fun as fuck.

This. If it's a water level you shouldn't drown. It should be fully underwater and you have to work around the reduced movement. Even TMNT's water level wasn't that bad since you at least had unlimited breath.

Water Temple's difficulty was an overblown millennial midwit meme that on exists because every late 2000s gamer content creator used it as the punchline to their AVGN tier jokes.

The temple is fine and actually requires some thinking to get through. Most players got filtered by missing the extremely obvious camera angle clue when they raised the platforms in the middle tower and didn't notice the hidden tunnel get exposed when the platform lifted.

Also one of the best soundtracks in a game that basically nailed every song.

They aren't. The flow is messed up, the layout of each dungeon tries to tailor to a specific mask but it fails to do something interesting with them since all the cool stuff is already done in the overworld.

the only thing I ever heard about it was the tedium of having to constantly go to the inventory to select iron boots, the temple outside of that didn't seem to particularly offend people.

a lot of people get stuck because there's an easy to miss key. it can be kind of confusing. I think it's a very clever dungeon but there were a lot of rumors back in the day about potential softlocks (they don't actually exist)
