The hovercraft dragged this game down from a 8.5/10 to a 6/10.

i loved this game as a kid
i wouldn't even have to race i'd just spend 30 minutes doing donuts and burnouts in the hub

Nah, there's only like 3 really really shitty hover craft levels but the rest of the game is great.

Boulder Canyon is the only track in the whole game I don't like.

The hovercraft is fun once you get used to it. It has a higher skill ceiling, but it possible to get really good at racing with the hovercraft. I thought it added some depth to the game because it handles so differently.

I never had a problem with any of the vehicles, the game controls great imo

I was thinking about what a remake could be like, and I came up with 2 ideas I think are neat

>make the most out of the small race maps by having the player go down different routes on each lap
>have vehicles dynamically shift during races. your vehicle automatically changes from land/air/sea as you approach certain areas

Here's a vague proof of concept. (Also for Hot Top Volcano make it so the volcano is erupting AS you're racing, so you start in a car and drive through the cave, then lap 2 you hovercraft through the cave as it's all turning into lava, then lap 3 you fly and everything is fully taken over by lava)

CTR is better in every conceivable way, tendie. It has never been topped to this day.

CTR came out two years later. Its probably the best imitator on the PS, but N64 had the better kart racers. ctually the first levels they had in CTR were direct copies of Diddy Kong Racing courses. Diddy Kong has better mechanics, more depth, more variety and fairer difficulty.

I get the appeal though “It’s like Mario Kart, but on my Play Station! So it must be the best!” Excellent cope

they already did that when you have to collect the silver coins.

the silver coins were a good idea done poorly, it would've been better to do alternate paths that were generally harder.

having to deal with rare's infamous rubber band AI while collecting those damned things, still I'd take that over the shitty remake.

I genuinely do not understand how anyone finds CTR to be good, it feels absurdly janky at the best of times
>>12107189
that too, like every time I see people play it's drift simulator, even Mario kart DS snaking wasn't that bad.

This would have been really cool. Same with water courses, the water level could slowly rise as you progress and make new routes available.

sadly that's probably a bit too ambitious for a 64 game.

Diddy Kong Racing 2 on Gamecube easily could've handled it.

True but by that point most of the talent of rare's golden days had already moved on.

Tendie coping by trying to downplay RARE. Retards bought Luigi's shitty ass Mansion, they would've bought Diddy Kong Racing 2 even if it sucked (which it wouldn't have)

that's a good idea i didn't think of that one

I like rare alot but I'm not going to pretend their golden days would've lasted forever even if nintendo bought them, a studio is only as good as the talent that works there, people do forget some of those 360 era games started development on game cube.

if I were a tendie I wouldn't say that grunty's revenge is actually good.

You made a good point here but if DKR got a remake you'd have to take multiplayer into account, clearly the silvers don't work there. I really think different type of laps would help make the small maps really feel dynamic and interesting.

I suppose there's the awkward situation of some people jut wanting simple laps. Idk how you'd do this in multiplayer other than to just try and put simple-lap players in the same race. In singleplayer this isn't a problem, literally just give them the option to toggle it off....hell, you could even customize the laps you wanna drive yourself! There doesn't even need to be just 3 types of laps, you could have 10 fucking types of laps and the game just picks 3 per race so you never know where the route might take you. It doesn't even need to be lap-based, you could just have it so points A B C & D on the map have alternate routes that the game selects at random as you race.

>>12107883
Also I'm obviously getting carried away with what might admittedly be a dumb idea a lot of people wouldn't like (speedrunner types especially would hate random routes), but lemme think. If you had just 4 diversion points on the map, where when you get there the game randomly decides one of 4 different routes you'll take/vehicles changes/map transformation/whatever (so there's 4 random options in each of the 4 branching points) I think the number of unique laps would be....256?? Cuz it's

>A1, A2, A3, A4
>B1, B2, B3, B4

16 unique combinations here (....I don't know how to math this out, I can just physically count there's obviously 16 combinations) and then when you add C paths you just take the existing set of possibilities and multiply it by 4, and do that again for D path possibilities. So 256 unique types of laps just from that. If you like having variety in your races this would be cool.

This is basically what Sonic and All-stars Racing Transformed did.

Yeah I honestly don't know why hubs didn't become like a standard for games like this.

Mario Kart absolutely should have stolen it. World did open world shit but that's different
