Not only can you do that, it's the logical standard and should be the starting point people think of unless they're on a tight budget. The reason some of us stray and get more than one can be for a couple of reasons. Often the powerful system is a big tablet device like a Steamdeck or Odin 2 Portal, and they think "boy it would be nice to have something small I can just stuff in my pocket and take everywhere, even if it can't play all my games. Or another reason, as is the case with me, is that I have an RP4 Pro which can of course easily handle older games and is still relatively portable. But I still prefer playing those older games on my 40XXH because the 4:3 screen, Nintendo-style dpad, and digital triggers make it feel like a better, more well-suited experience for me than on my RP4. Stuff like that. But people should only think about getting one general purpose device to begin with, and they'll know after a while whether they have a use case for one or more supplementary systems.

yeah I have a flip2 and a rg35xx plus which I never really touch. The flip 2 is probably my perfect device (except for emulation which needs a few more years of development). The color scheme and launcher (beacon) is perfect, NDS and 3DS are fine played with one bigger screen and one smaller screen on the flip2's display.

I guess the other guy that said the steam deck + small linux handheld is right. A large device for emulating at home/in bed and then a small one for travel is optimal.

You can probably just swap the stick caps out with third party caps, as this seems to be the case with Ayaneo's current devices. I assumed that naturally other cap colors would be included as this happened with the original Pocket Air and how people weren't terribly happy with the cream colored caps included, so Ayaneo included red and black colored caps with the device. Unfortunately it just doesn't seem like other stick colors are an option, at least from what chinese users showed off in the 1:42 mark.

At least with the RG557 it makes sense to give it the Xbox layout because the chipset used is powerful enough to warrant it. It should still be fine, but like with the Thor or Ayaneo DS it's just a compromise of needing to include two sticks. onto a clamshell. At the very least it still is ideal for DS games, along with retro games in general.

I just got an Rg35xxSP. It's been a great accompaniment to my shits and lying in bed waiting for my body to decide to go to sleep so far. Going to get a replacement SD card, perhaps try the tape mod and maybe put Knulli or MuOS on it. They all use screens like you'd have on your phone so you can test that right now with your own if you want. You need to get a specific stylus meant for capacitive screens and it does feel different than how it does on the DS and 3DS from my experience with having to use one for my dad's phone occasionally when he insists I use it because it's easier.

Essentially, it feels more like you're "gliding" on the screen and it's more slippery. I don't know how to explain it. It's not really pen-like but more like a gliding feeling instead. It's entirely usable but it's a different feeling to a DS and 3DS and will feel "off".

The modern phone screens are all capacitative while the DS screens were resistive. That basically means modern screens are better and more accurate with fingers, but will always be worse with a stylus. I haven't watched it, but Russ put out a video testing a bunch of professional and chink stylus' on the Thor screen and he basically said none of them are as good as playing on original hardware. It's just the trade-off you have to live with for better screens.

In all seriousness though, I already had a hunch these products weren't designed with non-normies in mind, so I came in with the expectation that something was going to falter sooner rather than later. I was in the middle of getting all S-ranks on Megaman Zero. I beat Battletoads. Was 100%ing DKC and DKC2 in 1 and 2 hours respectively, getting all Oxide times in CTR, and beating the dev times in Crash 3. It appears I am too exalted for products aimed at the casual pokemon masses. Great buttons though, and the shoulder buttons especially I found to be exceptional.

So yeah, if you take gaming a bit more seriously than the next guy, can't say I would recommend these things.

You will not have burn-in unless you specific play one single game and only that game for hundreds of hours straight from power on to power off. I have like 100+ hours into Freedom Wars and Muramasa and my screen is completely fine. only slightly.
the only real reason to recommend a vita oled is not because of the screen, but because with the 3g model you can install an internal sd card (psvsd) and leave the game slot free for physical games.
this is a non-issue if you don't plan on using carts anyway. but most vita owners have a sizable collection.
the vita oled also has magnetic sticks while the slim has regular carbon sticks, but they don't seem to fail as bad or quick as switch sticks.
the screen on the slim is great. sony lcd screens are usually great.

Google "crownpuff deals" and they should all be in a spreadsheet along with the best listings for most handhelds. Also, you might want to buy your own microSD card to use for these since most of these will come with shitty generic cards that have shitty ROM sets and are prone to failure, though some come with branded Kioxia cards which are decent after you format them.

Android has mostly figured it out, the main issue it has is input lag and the focus loss on inputs which the AYN Thor seems to have figured out.
With Linux you basically just have two monitors with one of them being touch-based. Pretty sure modern RetroArch and the various DS emulators work with displaying top to one monitor and bottom to another just for this scenario. Even if it's not perfect CFW will likely happen very quickly considering how popular this concept is with everyone and that will likely iron it out.

I do this and it's been great. Just make sure you have a means of quick suspend on the pocket device and it's perfect. Something like Onion OS's suspend state function or the Pixel 2's actual sleep mode.
In my experience having kept an RG280V in my pocket for years, before getting a Miyoo Mini + a few months ago, it really is the make or break difference for a pocket handheld (as well as being why I like my Steam Deck so much). With the 280V in the situations I wanted to kill time with, the problem I'd always have wasn't just starting it up, but also turning it off. Keeping my progress would mean not only waiting for the boot time, but also having to fiddle with menus to load/save state, it's not much but it's enough to make it awkward to drop it immediately when someone calls your name in a waiting room/line or your order is ready.

That being said, while I'm opining a bit on my experience with these two, there's one thing the RG280V has in spades over the MM+ at least, and it's that I could pretty confidently huck it at a wall and expect it to still work. My first MM+ I dropped off the kitchen table and two of the internal plastic pillars the screws screw into shattered. The MM+ & OnionOS is so nice that I just got a replacement with a 3 year protection plan, instead of something else, but things like drops or sitting on it weird in your pocket, are things I rarely see discussed here that will actually come up in day to day life, and a factor I think is worth considering for any chinkheld purchase
