console ports of PC games
I'm curious what noteworthy console ports of PC games you guys can recommend. Doom on PSX seems exceptionally well regarded, and unlike a lot of ports I think it actually does justice to if not improves on the original.

There's were always games like Lemmings, SimCity and Worms that were on a million different systems, but overall this always seemed like a rare and experimental area of games especially in the floppy and CD ROM era, with lots of unexpected ports. Monkey Island for example had a Sega CD port, Putt Putt had a 3DO port, and there were often region specific ones like Beavis and Butthead in Japan or Backyard Soccer in Europe. I also found the PS2 ports of Half Life and Deus Ex pretty impressive.
Console to PC ports are fine too i suppose. I would just like to discuss this niche area of /vr/ and if any of you had one of these ports what you thought of them

PSX Doom was even ported back to PC so you can play it at a more solid framerate. It’s not a mod but an actual port of the PSX version:

Rainbow 6 on N64 is well above average in performance, feels like 3dfx but at 320x240. I think a lot of reviewers thought it would be funny to rag on it without really even playing it much.

Those 16 bit ports to pc were weird, some directly converting the code and others just eyeballing it. Pitfall being a bit better in some areas but you need a Pentium 100 for it which is powerful enough to run Quake.

I played through the PSX port of Ultima Underworld a couple months ago and enjoyed it quite a lot. The controls take some time getting used to but once got the hang of it the game plays really nicely. After King's Field the combat felt pretty easy but the sense of exploration is really good in this game.

Doom PSX executes the horror aspect better than any of the other ports or the PC version due to the more quake-style soundtrack and the colored lighting. The limitations of the engine require lots of maps to have very low ceilings which adds to the feeling of dread and claustrophobia. These combine with the generally stiff and higher-risk higher-reward gameplay inherent to all Jaguar Doom based ports to create a very tense game.

Quake on Saturn is similar. Due to control differences, you can't play the game as fast as you play Quake on PC. This combines with the advanced lighting engine and some changes to enemy and weapon behavior to create a survival horror game where every shot counts and every enemy can potentially kill you if you aren't conserving your health and ammo correctly. 3 of the 4 secret levels are console-defining masterpieces, the first one in particular completely blowing away anything the PC Quake engine can do with all kinds of atmospheric lighting and rain effects.

As for console ports to PC, GTA3 and Vice City are unilaterally better on PC in every regard to the console release. 3 in particular plays completely differently because mouse aim was included as an afterthought and it isn't balanced around it. You run around the game as the freelook headshot ace, blowing everyone's head off with the M16, something you could only do by going into a super stiff first person aiming mode on PS2.

Diablo on PS1 is pretty cool, a neat curiosity playing with a controller

the Master System port of Ultima 4 is often called the best version of that game.

I have a little collection of them for teh PS1 , diablo 1 (actual great because of couch co op), warcraft 2, the command and conquers as well as stuff like the really unusal when you think about it port of Microsofts age of Empiures for the PS2. The direct link cable idea on the PS1 was cool but you needed two TVs near each other. I had my own lan setup with three PCs on it in the 90s so I tended to use that for multiplayer mainly stuff like duke 3d, warcraft

There was a PS1 mouse and it was pretty common but it was a ball mouse and they always sucked a bit compared to modern opticals.

Quake 2 got 2 impressive ports on the consoles, the PS1 port was scaled down pc version which let you use the mouse for better controls while the N64 version had unique levels, it was also pretty short

>PSX port of Ultima Underworld
I heard it has some nasty bugs with inventory overflow if you haul too much stuff around.

How many games actually support that? Would be interesting to try it out if it is supported in emulators.

It is compatible. Check the list

I've tried it with the Quake 2 port and some Breakout style games, it works very well (at least on Duckstation)

I was aware of the possibility of this bug so I made sure not to hoard too much and destroy as many scattered disposable items as possible. Not like you could carry with you too much anyway since the max carry weight restrictions are pretty harsh. The only bug I encountered through the game is that giving your enchanted gear for the repair returns it to you unenchanted so you need to train your repair skill yourself for doing that. Didn't really had any need for that either.

Pitfall is interesting in that it is apparently one of the first, if not THE very first PC game made specifically for Windows 95. It also has issues with running smoothly in full screen mode. The 320x200 mode makes it run too fast, whereas the 320x224 mode runs at the correct speed, but has screen judder and even some visual artifacts in motion. Weirdly enough, I've actually found the best way to play it in full screen is by setting the screen refresh rate to a multiple of 50Hz, which makes it run as smooth and judder-free as possible.

Don't mean to be patronizing, but it used to be common to say "disregard that, I suck cocks" or something similar as a way of admitting to making a mistake in a previous post.
