As someone who was a tendy as a kid, I will NOT tolerate this slander of the Genesis, Sega were THE only ones who could match Nintendo in those days. It was a golden time for 16-bit home console gaming.

Genesis sold extremely well in North America and Europe, both console and software sales. I don't know how you can look at the Genesis itself as a failure, even if you look at the poor sales in Japan, the overseas success cannot be ignored.

FF7 made it truly explode, but the prior Final Fantasies, Secret Of Mana, Chrono Trigger, etc, those had fairly substantial reception and sales. Consider how Mystic Quest didn't do that well because of how it failed to compare to other more deep and complex RPGs (relatively speaking, anyway).

Probably, but that's kind of secondary to his point, the Genesis saw extremely good reception and sales. The actual failures primarily come to the massive waste of time and money that is the 32X (a product which was unnecessary and unwanted), which then further hurt the Saturn, which itself was very poorly managed.
This is also with Nintendo having made some not very great decisions with the N64, so they both left the market wide open to the Playstation, the difference being that Nintendo could afford to fuck up N64, because they made so much money before, and then Pokémon was a money printing machine.
