I replayed the original on Amstrad CPC last year.
Then I did 2 and 3 on Amiga.
Horrendous ports.
A good version like the Apple original is perfectly playable today but requires effort unless you use a walkthrough.
The remastered Trilogy is the right way to go today.

Yes, games that were good back then like Lode Runner are still good. Bard's Tale however was always bad. Video games don't age.

And what does this have to do with the quality of the game? The answer is of course nothing. Plenty of crap games got good reviews back then the same they do it now. The only way to know how good a game is to play it yourself and I played it to know its shit.

That's because if someone asks if something "held up" or "aged", then you can be sure that the answer for him, is yes. The very fact that someone asks that questions shows that the person thinks modern standards are better and the only games that wouldn't have "aged" would be something similar to modern gaming standards.

Just play Dragon Wars, it's basically Bard's Tale IV and where they perfected the formula. Never been able to get into these, not sure why because I enjoy the other ancient blobber franchises.

The first game is fine, only play the sequels if you're a masochist, as halfway through the second game all sense of balance goes flying out the window and from then on until the end of the third game you will be facing hoards of dudes with walls of health, best strategy at that point is to pretty much run away from random encounters and only do the mandatory fights. DOS and Amiga versions of Bard's Tale 3 were outsourced to a third party programmer and it's a mess. Unity engine remake is alright, though some of the art is 'looking good' levels of quality.

For BT3 I found it wasn't so bad, because the lack of balance could go both ways.
I used a spell to capture the big bad of the first world (Brilhasti Ap Tarj, the priest of the mad god)) and make him into a party member, which greatly helped in stomping things afterwards.

It was neat to make a sorcerer and summon massively overpowered elemental party members. I think I've heard it mentioned it was an inspiration for Megami Tensei gameplay.

Lots of these crunchy RPG/adventure games require the player to keep notes and make maps, but that's a level of investment that some don't care for. So, yes but not if you're a passive player which describes most

That's funny, in the FC version of 2 that's also the case but in a different way: it becomes too easy but half the classes become almost useless too.

Speaking of the Bards Tale anyone here ever play Dragon Wars? It was originally developed as Bards Tale 4 before some shenanigans at interplay created a chang of plans. Been thinking of giving it a shot thos weekend

I played the NES/FC version which is mostly faithful to the original game (balancing is different and there are a couple of new additions) and it's easily one of the most underrated RPGs on the system
