I've been watching TNG after seeing a few episodes of SNW and Discovery, and it's so goddamn kino, leagues apart from everything else. I don't know why I had this image of TNG being like the original series and thinking "this shit is way too camp, like Adam West's Batman"

Have you not watched TOS? It's really not very camp outside of a few episodes. Go watch The Doomsday Machine if you don't believe me.

(Discovery is garbage IMO, SNW is kinda shitty but only gets about as stupid as Voyager did) Check out DS9 if you like the serious stuff, it's fantastic.

Check out Balance of Terror, The City on the Edge of Forever and The Trouble with Tribbles and you'll get an idea what most of the show will be like. Balance is my favorite overall. The one thing that produces the camp is the low budget. Other than that it was surprisingly good when i started watching all of it some 7 years ago.

Makes sense, budget, special effects, and production quality for TNG was much higher, which kids will pick up on. If you can see past that surface stuff, TOS has a lot going for it.
In particular, the chemistry between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is something later Treks have struggled to replicate.

>SNW is kinda shitty but only gets about as stupid as Voyager did
Voyager gets a lot of hate in the community, but after actually sitting through all of it recently, it's severly overhated. The premise gets thrown out of the window pretty early on, which is where a lot of the stupidity stems from, but it has so many good "syndication" episodes which you can just put on without much context. and 7of9 gets wrongly accused of being sorely coombait, maybe that was initially the idea, but the characters is really good, as all slightly autistic/robotic characters are in Trek. And i dont even hate Neelix, they didnt give Ethan Phillips enough emotional moments, because he can carry intensity. When Tuvok busts a move for Neelix at his farewell, i legit started sobbing like a faggot.

I digress. all i want to say is that Voyager isnt nearly as stupid as Nu-Trek, just a little bit here and there.

seriously. the episode where he died and is brought back only to realize there is no afterlife really underlines that neelix doesnt have to be goofy all the time. and the doctor also has some good emotional moments, especially with seven, but he wasnt given enough to work with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGpLrGOEI3Y

Not true. There are great trek fps and ship sim games. Star Trek just hasn’t had the kind of investment from devs other franchises like Star Wars got because the trek fan base is notoriously older and was already middle-aged in the 90s when pc gaming started to take off.

S1, 2, and a lot of 7 did not. Again, I can tell you’re focusing on the look of the show instead of the storytelling.

Voyager was decent until they abandoned the premise of the show after s3. The show became more and more generic after that, with too much focus on seven and the doctor. It lost all its personality and sacrificed almost all of the cool storylines it started with in favor of more borg.

Same. I remember getting to a point in the main quest where I couldn't figure out what to do, so I would just fire it up to read the computer entries and randomly warp to planets to see if I could find anything, or blow up some Romulans on the way.

I loved how pissed Picard would get if you just opened fire on enemy ships you encountered before answering their hails. Made it way easier to kill them, though, lol.

Season 2 has Measure of a Man. Your argument is invalid.

I only really disliked the early seasons of TNG as a kid. There are still a lot of interesting plots and ideas, permeated by the odd, unsalvagable episode. But even those are more genuinely interesting and thought-provoking than modern TV slop, so I always cringe whenever anyone says "YAH TNG GOOD JUST SKIP TO SEASON 3 LOL".

>>12130590
>Voyager was decent until they abandoned the premise of the show after s3
They abandonned the premise of the show almost immediately. The entire concept was "what if a single starship had to survive apart from the federation and suffer actual consequences" and the only time it ever really delivered on that concept were things like the Year of Hell two-parter, which ended up being an alternate reality.

Season 3 of Enterprise was better at being Voyager than Voyager was.

Don't forget more "time travel." Brannon and Braga apparently got it in their heads that City on the Edge of Forever is a beloved fan favorite that always gets into "top 10 Trek" lists not because it was a masterfully written story by Harlan Ellison, but no, it was clearly because it had time travel. So they just started to stuff time travel into everything.

nu-trek imo is basically...
orville > lower decks > strange new worlds > discovery > picard. (i haven't seen enough of prodigy to rate it).

disco as it's own thing is an okay to mediocre sci-fi show but is a terrible trek show (which checks out since they plagiarized a video game for the main plot of S1 & S2) while picard is arguably worse because it's such a boring show. it feels like they took 3 TNG movie scripts and decided to stretch them out into 3 seasons of a TV show.

Depends what you mean. I feel like the P&C adventures (A Final Unity, 25th Anniversary) both cater more to the spirit of an actual Trek episode.

Elite Force is objectively a really fun game, but Star Trek was never really about blasting things into smithereens. The more Trek-y bit of that game is the add-on where you can explore Voyager, talk to the crew and fix things.

TNG is a real mixed bag especially in the first two seasons. Even later seasons would have the occasional shit episode and sometimes otherwise decent episodes would be brought down by all the sanctimony.

>>12130581
Part of the problem with Star Trek is that the appeal is really multi-faceted. With Star Wars you have a two obvious action domains to focus on: lightsabers+blasters and space combat. Easy to make whole games that heavily focus on one or the other and satisfy the itch. With Star Trek, it's harder to focus on one without feeling like other parts aren't getting enough attention. Focus on planet-side away team stuff and I miss voyaging on The Enterprise. Focus on spaceship dynamics and I miss the planetary exploration.

Maybe there's a game that nails the balance, I stopped trying to find them a long time ago.
