this game is impossible to 100% without a guide. how the fuck could anyone figure out a shinespark? not to mention they'd have to autistically xray every single pixel in every single room.

If you don't like 100%'ing it then don't do it

So what? Most games with any degree of exploration are hard to 100% without a guide. As long as it's beatable without a guide is all that matters.

There was this thing in video games back then we called secrets. They were things that were intentionally hard to find so it felt special when you found them, like you just stumbled upon something you're not supposed to have that will give you an advantage

all you had to do was go to the store and get the POWER, dude. Nintendo Power, motherfucker!

This, it was all a ploy to sell copies of Nintendo Power, by capitalizing on this feeling: >>12122861

This. You learn shinespark from the bird and wall jumping from the monkeys. Although as I dumb kid, I fell into that hole and didn't get it so I thought I was stuck forever and just restarted the whole game. I also remember not knowing you could run with the R Button for the longest time.

Wow, and I thought I had trouble getting out of that hole
Took me like two separate days and I couldn’t do it reliably after I got out of the hole

so? that's supposed to be normal. secrets are supposed to be secret and puzzles are supposed to be puzzling. what are you even complaining about here?

I kind of agree. I 100% it many times, with the guide until I just memorized where everything was in subsequent throughways. Now a few years ago I played it after not touching it for over a decade. I did pretty well. I think I was missing just one super missile, a bomb and 7 missiles. I went through the whole game using the x-ray and I was STILL missing 5 missiles. Fuck.

Secrets don't exist in modern games, so the zoomers don't get it

well look at a guide then, it's not too hard to remember once you know where everything is anyway. those rooms with items that aren't marked on the map (especially the ones with two items) are pretty stupid though i'll give you that. later games the maps give ya the full details and you can use power bombs to reveal items.
