Good for you, anon. I love that Vectrix. Did you grow up with them and are an oldfag, or just like them for some reason? It's pretty rare to like that gen unless you were growing up with it. I grew up with the NES and played Atarti 2800, but even then I knew it was pretty outdated by early NES standards.

I got a newer AVR recently, and since it doesn't convert analog video to HDMI, also got a cheap RetroScaler 2x. Decent hardware for the price. It allows me to use the better S-Video input on my N64, but now I don't have component video capability for my Xbox. Debating whether to bother with that when I can play my old Xbox games with my 360.

>Did you grow up with them and are an oldfag, or just like them for some reason?
A mix of grew up with them and just like em. I'm definitely not an oldfag though. I'm part of that weird in between space of young millennials that are too old to be zoomers but barely remember life before 9/11. Grew up with a mix of Windows 98, the PS2 and the Wii. I wasn't poor growing up but wasn't rich either, and since you only got a new game on Christmas and your birthday or after saving up your allowance for months, I bought a lot of retro game compilations since they were often cheaper and gave you a lot of games for your money. Activision Anthology, Intellivision Lives, Namco Museum, Atari Anthology, those types of games. So I grew up with the games, but not with the systems, if that makes sense.

Gonna be honest, asking "whats a good set-up for this hobby I enjoy", sounds very gay and like trying to fit in to something. Did you need advice when you were kid of how you should set up your bedroom? Most set-ups are not one size fits all. It's just making a workable space in whatever spare area you have with whatever stuff you have access to. Unless what someone is really asking is "how can I make a set-up that will maximize people on the internet giving me a thumbs-up?"

If you look closely in the picture of my collection you can see that mine is still miscalibrated from when I bought it. I took some electrical repair classes in college, so I dug up the old factory service manual online, put on some heavy rubber gloves and opened it up to fuck with it. I thought it was just the X and Y adjustment potentiometers or the CRT centering rings being misaligned. Turns out it was neither of those, so I'm waiting for a slow day at work so I can take it in an use a company oscilloscope to further diagnose it. I probably should buy a multicart with the factory test program before I do that, too.
Take extra care to NOT TOUCH the inside of the CRT if you open up the Vectrex, it can and will kill you if you're not careful.

i started buying stuff 20 years ago, most of it sat on a shelf since, id planned to get round to it or play those games eventually but never did.

i started selling stuff off bout 10yrs ago, a lot i sold to CeX for some quick cash, so id get about half what its worth sometimes a 5th of what its worth.

couldnt be bothered with the hassle of selling it individually, stil i made a profit on some stuff, other stuff i got less that i paid 10-20 yrs ago.

since im fast approaching 40 its time to get rid of a lot of shit, i kept a lot of the consoles and a few games for each that have sentimental value, and sold everything else, i plan to get flash carts for my 8/16bits, everything else has hdd/sd for games.

Also thank you both for the advice. I don't shit about the 8-bit Atari computers besides that there's ton of arcade games I wanna play on them, so I'll keep my eyes out for an 800. Those are considerably cheaper than the 5200 and XEGS anyway.

Good setup, the guide.
>acquire 27" (or larger) CRT (preferably with s-video & composite, late model Trinitrons are a good bet)
>acquire good quality composite or s-video cables (monster cable is worth it)
>acquire audio receiver (any old one will do)
>acquire bookshelf speakers
>acquire a furniture piece to place your acquired setup on
>acquire surge protector (buy a new Tripp Lite)
>hook it all up
That's it. That's how you get a good setup.

Really just proves these people are posers trying to look hardcore and don't really know anything, emulator inaccuracies are just placebo and impossible to see unless you're autistic whereas 50hz is immediately noticeably inferior to anyone with eyes.

I don't visit this board very much anymore because there aren't very many good posters left and I don't enjoy the low effort baiting and shitposting culture but I'll try my best to give you sound advice. Start with one system and one TV. Best place to buy a system is on FBMP and make sure you can test it, if that doesn't work try a retro store if you have one locally, they should have tested it and maybe even cleaned it before buying it themselves. I'd advise against ebay for this because it's a dumping ground for stuff that is in less than good condition, but if you find a good deal it might be worth it. Buy a TV off craigslist or FBMP, any CRT will do to start off. Don't spend a lot of money on your first TV. 20 - 27" is what most people like but you may like larger or smaller than that. Don't search for "crt" or "trinitron" or whatever else, just search for "tv" and start scrolling, people selling CRTs typically don't put a lot of effort in their posts and just want it gone. Just start playing games and having fun. You can go with original carts or a flashcart, nothing wrong with either. Be on the lookout for a better TV all the time, you are going to want to swap it for a nice one eventually, Sony, Toshiba and JVC are the known good brands but I've had a ton of crap TVs that look better picture wise than the brands I listed. Don't get hung up on brands or models, look for picture quality and good inputs. You will want S-video and component eventually. Getting some decent speakers is nice, but that's probably down the line a bit if you are just getting started.

Lots of people (especially zoomers) never had a sound system in their house growing up and lots of people also don't have any experience with cable quality. You don't know what you don't know. You are correct, however, that a basic logic stream should very quickly land on "battlestation or gaming setup is an A/V setup; get good stuff and have good setup".

There's a bajillion good audio receivers floating around for pennies to peanuts and just as many speakers. Walk into any ol' boomer's house and they have one or two unused receivers just sitting somewhere. Probably would give them to you for cleaning the gutters, too. In my experience, most powered speakers require a special adapter to work with a TV anyway. Speaker cord gives you a lot more freedom to put your shit where you want and actually hide cords. Receivers also give you the ability to customize your audio to a degree that your TV probably can't. I would consider typical powered speakers a workable solution, but not really fit for a "good" setup.

Powered speakers just implies having a built in amp designed specifically for the drivers. Full setup I'm just talking about a receiver/amp, floor speakers and a sub, makes little sense to have all that just to play video games, maybe if you had a VCR or turntable I would understand the need for that but we're just talking about video games. Modern powered speakers usually use RCA wires, you can find them new for about $100, used half that or less.
Anonymous No.12138973 [Report]
>>12138938
Weird that you consider a sub and floor speakers necessary for a VCR, but not for video games. Also, I never said anything about floor speakers and subs in my good setup guide. You don't need either of those for a good setup. Bookshelf speakers are perfectly acceptable.

just seems pointless to hold on to most of that shit, its sat on a shelf for 15-20 years and i still havent got round to enjoying it so far and probably never will, i decided to down size and just keep things that are important, and turn the rest into cash.

Plus there is now less time to play, and less time to play for long sessions.

thats it, and the reason i mainly play arcade games now, something you can play for 5mins or 30mins, usually i play negeo games on my nds lite, works pretty gud.

I have a decent CRT, cables etc. No audio system but the TV is loud enough, I just am not good at furniture or picking a comfortable aesthetic. Management is annoying.

I got a JVC 20" for $150. It costs more than $250 on average where I live (NY) on Marketplace.
I honestly like Composite/SVideo, just need good furniture and a way to set them up. A lot of them have broken in storage and don't know whether to fix or replace.

Furniture and speakers are afterthoughts especially furniture. Just make sure it's something substantial enough to support the weight of the TV. As for the speakers you will want to make sure they are shielded if you plan on having them right next to your TV.

>Full setup I'm just talking about a receiver/amp, floor speakers and a sub, makes little sense to have all that just to play video games
Why not? Do video games not have low-frequency audio? Also, if you're already getting an amp and speakers, that's a majority of the cost/effort of a "full setup", anyway. Adding a sub is practically effortless. You don't really know what you're talking about.

Some of it is in my closet, most is in a storage unit. No time or space for videogames. Even on my downtime I'm usually exhausted and coming here is easy and gives me a similar feeling. I have an r36s I play on at night or days like today where I'm recouping from working myself into an early grave

Man I need to unfuck my living room setup, the free furniture I got from my dad is nice but it doesn't accommodate multiple systems and game/movie cases very well. My roommate and I have been trying to keep an eye out at thrift stores but nothing really has caught our eye.
