I played it again after 25-30 years this spring. It really is a perfect game. Not my favorite (FF fan) but damn, it's so nice to play. It controls just right, the music is good, and there are tons of hidden things.
Absolute 10/10 contrarians can suck it.

It honestly does feel like the perfect 2D Mario. I'm constantly surprised by how timeless the style and gameplay are.
Due to my own personal biases I often go back to SMB1, but truly SMW does feel like it could have been released yesterday without any changes, which is a tremendous feat in and of itself, let alone the game releasing at the time in the console's lifespan that it did.

I agree except they are perhaps a bit too generous with powerups. It's fine, I'm not concerned about the "challenge", it's just getting another feather from a block when you already have two feathers is just "oh, well".

Cape and Yoshi made it too forgiving, while making fire flower useless- Too many enemies are immune to fire and are easily bypassed with cape.
It's why SMB3 will always be better in my eyes, I do like the exploration SMW allows, but only the forts and castles are remotely challenging.

Disagree, I quite enjoyed fire flower gameplay. "Useless" is ambiguous, it's useful in the sense that it's fun, which is what video games are all about. I would politely suggest you consider trying playing games for fun rather than spreadsheeting the bare minimum necessary techniques required to add the game to your "100% clear" checklist and forgetting about it.

the powerups in this game are even more bullshit though. turn invincible and fly over whole levels just by mashing tanuki suit, hammer bro suit that lets you gank anything from a safe distance, frog suit that makes every water level super ez. you can also just skip half the levels in the game with clouds and pwings because you can carry an entire armory of powerups instead of just the one in reserve
cape mario with yoshi and the new spin jump can do a ton of shit all at once, but there's more nuance to using it all optimally and that makes SMW way more fun to replay and get better at + is the reason why this games romhacking is infinitely more interesting then 3's ever could be

Do you have any idea how easy it is to look at the maps from this game? Do you really think you are fooling anyone? Even Sonic 1 on the Master System has more visual variety between the zones than Mario World.
