I've been thinking about it - how do people stomach using devices capable of playing so many libraries without suffering decision paralysis, or at most falling back to familiar games?

I don't deny the pros of such devices, but if you have so many games at your disposal, choosing one is just so hard. With original hardware, you mostly had to cope with physical media, narrowing down the selection to the system and what's available on hand.

Maybe I'm just retarded? I'm thinking you could just look for games for one system, as opposed to scrolling through ALL the systems. Maybe I'm too keen on looking for good hidden gems among a sea of shit? But there's already a game recommendations wiki for each system.

Yeah, I think I'm retarded for this kind of thinking, given I still suffer decision paralysis trying to find games for my own systems.

only place a dozen or so games on a handheld at a time

Well, that's where I failed. Put too many fucking games on my 3DS and Vita. While I have had my 3DS for some time and played some games, I can only stomach playing like 2 or 3 on my Vita.

I have created a priority list and use a favorites feature so I can only focus on playing a few games at once.

I also manually download only roms that interest me instead of full sets.

I play my r36s a lot and I'm usually just checking out new titles and adding them too my favorites list. I've beaten a crap ton of arcade games this way.

Its the opposite for me, I only focus on maybe 2 games at a time to completion. Maybe an extra one if it's a quick pick-up-and-play type game. And as of last year I've stopped replaying the same handful of favorites from when I was young and have been exclusively playing games that I missed out on

Similar here. I'll still pick up an oldie but Goldie once in a while, but, yeah, I'm having so much fun playing new games. A totally different type of engagement bow that I'm older.

Personally, I keep a library on them that consists of somewhere between 100 to 150 games. I'm someone who has fun replaying my favorites, and with a library that size it takes months or longer to get back to some titles.

Then I put on no more than 2 games weekly, sometimes bi-weekly of trial games. I try them and if I play them to completion and enjoy them they stay on the device. Sometimes, I play a game and that one playthrough is enough so I delete it. However a majority of the time I spend about an hour with them and know I'm not interested in finishing them for one reason or another and delete them.

tl:dr the trick is selecting a few games every week or so, giving them an honest try and determining if it's something you actually enjoy or not. Don't be discouraged to drop games you truly aren't enjoying. There are 1000s of games to try and there is nothing wrong with admitting you just didn't like one even if it's a popular title. Don't let others decide if you like or dislike something it's all subjective.

just put on one rom at a time after you've completely finished or given up on the last one.

I'll let you know when I figure it out, but for now I'm working on medaling every level in Star Fox 64 again.

I sometimes spend days setting up some device with literally everything. Like decades worth of games and platforms.
And then I never use it.
I just recently stopped all that emulation crap and just got back to original hardware and for some magical reason I actually play it instead of just setting it up and thinking
>oh cool that works now

I play a lot with my New Nintendo 3DS XL. I've been immersed in the GBA library for months thanks to open_agb_firm and the fact that the GBA hardware is still inside the 3DS (thanks Iwata, you were the best, today's Jewtendo would eliminate all unnecessary hardware to cut costs). I'm replaying my classics and discovering gems that I couldn't play back in the day because I had limited funds for games as a kid. The rule is simple. I browse the catalog by release date. I have the romset on my computer, but I only transfer one ROM to the 3DS SD card. The ROM I've decided to play. I've committed to playing it because when I saw it in the catalog, it looked interesting. I won't add another ROM until I've completed the game 100%. That's it. There's no rush.

Its easy, first you curate all the systems you're interested in. Have them all in the archive, then you curate the top 20-30 out of them for every system.

I use the favorite list on my launcher to have a list of a dozen games to play

I also keep full rom sets in a different folder than my library scans and only add games I plan to play. That way I have the best of both worlds be cause I have a small list of games, but also still have access to every game

You have to cull down to like 2 games maximum at a time. I personally like the 'One Big and One Small' method, where there's a long game and a more casual/fun game to play. For me that usually means an RPG/strategy game, and something gamey like Warioware or Pokemon Pinball.

The decision making process for me, and the one I recommend, is to make a shortlist of the roms you have on your computer and decide which 2 to load on the handheld. You could choose a certain genre, a certain console to focus on for a few months, etc.

If you have like 50 games on there, you'll play 10 seconds of a bunch of games and that's kind of it. Total waste.

i only play a handful of games until i beat them. then i play a new game. But sometimes if a game isn't hooking me, i'll drop it and come back later.
however, i've calculated that it might take me about 300 years to beat all the games in my library.

>choosing one is just so hard.

You focus your mind for a moment, pick from the big list a name that gives you a bit of a good feeling, and then play that game. Next time you look at the list, skip the decision step and just go straight to that same game again. Next time, do the same again. Repeat until you feel you've done everything you want to do in the game. Then return to the start.

This is difficult?

You can also guide yourself by loading only one or two games onto a device at a time, or keeping a window open with a nice shortcut straight to emulation of just one game (until you're done with that game), or whatever.

not even that, put 3 games on and only playthose 3 games until you beat them all
