Were ID Software really huge fanboys for Nintendo?

Carmack's original big tech breakthrough was used to do reproduce SMB3 on computers, Romero asked Kemco to make the GBC version of Daikatana like Zelda, and Tom Hall's Anachronox was mirrored after Japanese design sensibilities, not western. And I recall Romero's favorite game is Chrono Trigger.

Anyone who loved video games in the 90s was a huge fanboy for Nintendo. The Nintendo of then was not the Nintendo of now, my young anon.

Despite everything, even today's Nintendo continues to focus on gameplay above all else. And anyone who loves video games undoubtedly appreciates this. Doom is pure gameplay, and that's why, despite its theme, it has a long tradition on Nintendo platforms.

In the US, it was either Nintendo or Sega. I remember seeing some videos in the id offices that had them playing Aladdin on Genesis around the time of its release.

Americans who had the means played games from all over the world. The tribalistic nature of the common europoor hadn't infected vidya in those days.

We europoors were enjoying Famiclones.
NDS only happens in certain individuals with certain psychological characteristics, it isn't related to region.

You have to admit there's a tendency for Countryball in your lands. I blame soccer and generations of ideological and religious wars that infected the world after the 90s. America is but a victim of Europe.

Nah, it's a human problem, not a region problem.
Americans are obsessed with us vs them too, and the rest of the world is a victim of that in terms of political influence.

Americans adopted European ways and nationalism, an invention of Europe, because they were Europeans and sent their children there to be educated and adopted their education systems. The internet, as a substrate, allowed country-based European tribalism to spread like wildfire. Human nature is a tool using species and we are shaped by our tools, printing press to smartphone.

Over resources. What limited resource causes the ideological squabbles you see on the internet? No, this is a cycle of abuse, not nature. The very problem is that our nature is so adaptable, strength becomes weakness on the longer timeline.

>What limited resource causes the ideological squabbles you see on the internet
It's a bit more complicated but can be explained easily
1) you defend then video games your parents could buy you as a kid
2) you defend the games you spent the most time with as a kid
Time is a resource, and when people realize that they've been wasting it on bad western games on microcomputers instead of good japanese fames on Nintendo systems, despite always affirming that "nintendo bad! Kiddie!" to themselves, it effectively becomes a war of resources too.

Why isn't there a war on the specious tribalism that you describe then? These threads are wastes of time and youth is a period where you waste your time in general. Time to put away the habits of your forefathers and live for yourself.

People war about everything: movies, music, food, generations, tastes in general.
The human experience is weird.
But I agree it's up to each individual.

That's right, Nintendo was a big influence on them. Tom Hall also correctly credited SM64 with defining the 3D platformer as a genre and setting the standard.

Carmack was a tendie? Ewww I don't think I like Doom anymore
Anonymous No.12155303 [Report]
>>12155175
yes. Nintendo codified the whole idea of the mascot platformer, which basically defined video games for the latter part of the 80's, and the 90's.
Id got their start very explicitly trying to clone Mario for DOS.

They really don't anymore, not for several years. They are arguably more "gamey" than Sony and Microsoft but they are a very shitty company these days and a lot of their modern games are just mediocre rehashes of games that came out when they were still good.

Doom has a long tradition of being ported to and running on absolutely fucking everything.

Nintendo was everyone's inspiration back then. Donkey Kong was a phenomenon, and then after the crash and Super Mario Bros on the NES everyone was crazy about Nintendo and Jap games. Their pixel art was just so beautiful and superior to western game art. It's part of the reason why Midway was inspired to use digitalized graphics in their games starting with NARC and leading towards Mortal Kombat. They couldn't compete so they had to pivot to something new.

You’re underselling just how massive an influence the Apple II and D&D were on Romero and Carmack. Richard Garriott was as much an idol to them as Miyamoto, if not more so.
